Charter Day Ceremony During Founders Week Highlights Legacy of Giving

California State University, Chico will honor the generosity and vision of its founders and the spirit of giving that continues to this day at a special Founders Week event Friday, April 24, at 2 p.m.

In 1909, President Charles Van Liew of the Northern Branch State Normal School announced an annual event called Charter Day to pay tribute to the people who had founded the school, which would later become CSU, Chico. In honor of her late husband, John Bidwell, who had donated the land for the school in 1887, Annie Bidwell made a gift of additional land between the Normal School and Big Chico Creek.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Charter Day announcement, CSU, Chico President Paul Zingg will host the April 24 ceremony at the front entrance of Kendall Hall, where the Normal School building stood from 1888 to 1927.

2008-2009 Student Employee of the Year

Congratulations to Kyle Hughes

The selection committee for the 2008-2009 Student Employee of the Year is proud to announce Kyle Hughes as this year’s recipient of this year’s award. Kyle received a very nice plaque along with a $500 cash award for his service as the AS Adventure Outings Bike Cart Manager. Below is nomination information for Kyle:

Kyle doubled the number of hours of operation for the Bike Cart which lead to a 325% increase in revenue. Kyle initiated an agreement with the University Police Department that allows bikes impounded by UPD to be fixed up and sold at a campus bike auction and the proceeds from this sale go to students who need financial assistance to go on Adventure Outings trips. Kyle’s efforts have meant over $22,000 sales in used-bike auctions of which, $7,000 was donated to the Get Outdoors Fund. Through Kyle’s efforts and work with the Bike Cart, many, many Chico State students now have useable bikes for transportation. Kyle was also active in the “I Bike Chico” campaign and organized a bike swap that was open to the community and he set up an energizer station in City Plaza for the morning commute.

Kyle is from Lafayette, CA; a senior majoring in Civil Engineering.

Also receiving special recognition were:

Prasad Patkar: Disability Support Services
Sushat Koyate: Student Health Service
Amanda Raynor: Liberal Studies Advising

CELT/CAPE Forum on Academic Integrity

On Wed., Apr. 22, 7:30pm in Holt 170 there will be a panel discussion about academic integrity. The purpose of the forum is to generate a discussion with the audience on plagiarism and misuse of information — how the issue is perceived by students and faculty, how to improve education about it, and the adjudication of violations.

In planning this forum, it was mentioned that foreign students often have a much different perspective about the appropriate use of resources. For example, it was commented that in some Asian countries it is considered a complement to extract other people’s writings word-for-word. As a participant in the effort toward campus internationalization, your participation would be very welcome. Please also encourage your students to attend and participate in this important discussion.

For more information, please contact: Lee Altier or Robert Jones, CAPE Director.

CSU, Chico Superior Ag/Tri Counties Bank Golf Classic

Spring is upon us, and in the North State, that means it is time to sign up for the CSU, Chico Superior Ag/Tri Counties Bank Golf Classic. The College of Agriculture is pleased to announce that Tri Counties Bank is the major sponsor for the 2009 Golf Classic.

The golf classic, scheduled for Monday, June 8, at Butte Creek Country Club, is the premiere fund-raising event for the College of Agriculture. This event raises more than $40,000 annually for the College of Agriculture and helps support scholarships and other student-related programs.

This popular golf classic fills up fast, and the player list is almost full, but there are still opportunities to help ensure this event is a success. Individuals and businesses choosing to sponsor the golf tournament will help the future leaders of the state’s agricultural industry and enhance visibility in the agricultural sector as well as qualify for a tax deduction. The participants represent several commodities and some of the most prominent producers and agribusiness companies in the North State. There are many different sponsorship options available. Organizational Change in Higher Education Workshop, May 5

In January a number of people from campus participated in a “Leadership in Action” workshop as part of campus efforts to address new realities in higher education and at CSU, Chico. The impetus for the workshop and a proposed series of discussions on change came from an empowering, impromptu discussion in October as the result of a failed webcast — “Change in Higher Education: Why is it so hard?” in which participants expressed a desire for the opportunity to debate readings and ideas, and make contacts with others with similar interests. The feedback from the January workshop (posted on the VISTA community), emphasized the difficulty of facilitating needed change in higher education. Therefore, we are continuing the work on grappling with change through the discussion of focused topics.

The campus community is invited to the first of these sessions — Organizational Change in Higher Education — on May 5 in BMU 210 from 2:30pm - 4pm. Arno Rethans, Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, will lead the discussion on a topic that was frequently referenced at the initial workshop. To prepare for the discussion, please review the reading(s) located in the April 28 Organizational Change folder in the VISTA community. If you are not yet a member, please e-mail Lori Fuentes your portal ID and she will see that you are added to the community.

Look for ongoing sessions and the formation of working groups at the beginning of the fall 2009 semester. Meanwhile, we seek your input at both the next session and in the VISTA community on change topics you would like to see addressed, or for sessions you would like to lead.

Please contact Lori Fuentes if you wish to register for the May 5 workshop and/or to join the Framing Meaningful Change community in Vista.
