Chico State’s Ballroom Dance Night Will Be a Red Carpet Affair
Razzle Dazzle Ballroom: A Red Carpet Affair will be held on Wednesday, May 6, 7-10 p.m. in the Shurmer Gym. Dancers from the community, Butte College and the University are welcome to this event that has been a tradition at California State University, Chico for more than 50 years.
“The tradition started in the early 1960s,” said Professor Patricia Smiley, director of the CSU, Chico Ballroom Dance program. “In the beginning, music was supplied by records. Today, a professional DJ provides the music.”
More than 400 people attend the event, said Smiley. “The students have attended classes, know how to dance and come dressed in their best. Even if you cannot dance, you can come watch the dancers twirl, turn and float around the dance floor,” she said.

Phi Kappa Phi Initiation and Medallion Ceremony
The California State University, Chico chapter of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society will hold its annual Initiation and Medallion Ceremony on Monday, May 4,
3:30¬-5 p.m. in the Bell Memorial Union Auditorium. New members will be inducted into the society, and the Dorthea Powers Scholarship will be awarded.
The honors will be presented by college deans, chapter officers and other university representatives. Department chairs, academic advisors, staff and faculty, family members and friends are encouraged to attend.

Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve Spring Hikes
Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve (BCCER) still has two hikes scheduled in their series of natural history hikes. An easy hike is scheduled for this Sunday, April 26, and a moderate hike is scheduled for the following Sunday, May 3.
“Folks from BCCER will lead the hikes into Big Chico Canyon for an exploration of the season’s treasures,” said Mark Lynch, education coordinator for BCCER. “Come and enjoy the spring canyon sun, move through blooming flowers and creek side riffles as you experience an educational visit to Big Chico Creek Canyon.”
The easy hike scheduled for this coming Sunday, April 26, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., follows the gentler contours of the canyon and the safest routes of the reserve. It will be leisurely and there will be time to enjoy the springtime flowers. Bring a lunch.

CSU, Chico Model UN Delegation Wins Top Awards at National Conference
For the first time since the 1990s, students participating in the Model United Nations (MUN) course at California State University, Chico won the two top awards at the national Model United Nations Conference held in New York April 5-9. The Chico delegation, representing the Republic of Korea, was named an Outstanding Delegation from a field of more than 160 colleges and universities.
This is the third year in a row Chico students have come home with an Outstanding Delegation award. Only the top 8 percent of all attending schools attain the outstanding ranking. In addition, the CSU, Chico team won the award for Outstanding Position Papers. Chico’s awards place the team within the top 4 percent of all schools attending the competition.
In addition to the two outstanding awards, eight individual students received peer recognition for their work in their individual committees: Jenny Cox and Serdar Yesildag in General Assembly Second Committee; Anna Birch and Mark Whalen in the Economic Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific; Ashley Connell and Boshion Crandall in the Economic and Social Council Plenary; and Brittany Bledsoe and Kelley Fairchild in the African Development Bank Committee.

Fall English Dept. Course on War and Literature
Sign up now for Engl 462, Studies in Major American Authors (“Tim O’Brien and the American Literature of War”). This course uses four major works by Tim O’Brien as the foundation to understand the theme of war in American literature. Students will receive an in-depth look at Tim O’Brien’s career but will also examine other selections from American literature that provide context for and respond to O’Brien’s work. Readings and discussions in multiple genres will help students understand the role of American writers in witnessing and responding to war. The focus of the class is not on debating the pros and cons of current American involvement in the Middle East, but instead on how war is understood in American culture and history through the devices and techniques used by American authors.

Internship Opening at the Campus Wellness Center
The Wellness Center would like to announce the opening internship positions for the Fall 2009 semester. This internship is a great opportunity for students of all majors to gain significant experience in program development, outreach, and presentation skills.

Hazardous Tree Removal
The Grounds Department will be removing a Water Oak from the Alumni Glen area on the North side of the creek. During the recent high water, the base of the tree was submerged and the root system is seriously eroded. For questions or concerns, contact Grounds Manager Durbin Sayers (898-3893).

Wounded In America Exhibit - 2nd Floor of BMU
The Chico State Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and the BMU Public Art Space Program are proud to sponsor Wounded in America, an exhibit documenting the oral histories and portraits of a diverse group of gun violence survivors. By recording these stories and portraits, writer Stephanie Arena and photographer Robert Drea endeavor to bring a true picture of gun violence and its consequences to Americans. The project hopes to stimulate reflection, dialogue, and debate.

Last Chance - Survey on Concealed Weapons on Campus
Thanks to all who already completed the survey!
Professors Ryan Patten and Matt Thomas of the Political Science Department are conducting a survey of staff and faculty, regarding opinions on concealed firearms on campus. In light of the recent shootings on college campuses across the country, there has been a grassroots movement for students to have the right to carry concealed handguns on campus. This research, conducted at both CSU, Chico, and another college campus, seeks to better understand attitudes about concealed firearms. Approximately 1,100 CSU, Chico students completed surveys in the fall.
Please follow the link to complete the accompanying survey. This survey will take only about three minutes to complete. This research project has been cleared by the Human Subjects in Research Committee.

Museum WithOut Walls (MWOW) continues tomorrow
The Gateway Science Museum (formerly the Northern California Natural History Museum) continues its lecture series, Museum WithOut Walls (MWOW) tomorrow evening. Please join us to hear John Carlon from River Partners, discuss Protecting and Restoring the Sacramento River.
The MWOW series is held each Wednesday in April, beginning at 7:30pm, at the CARD Center on Vallombrosa Avenue. Suggested donation of $3 per adult; students are FREE with ID.

International Festival, April 25
The 35th International Festival will be held Sat., April 25 from 11am to 4pm on the Chico State Kendall Hall Lawn. Coordinated by the Associated Students, Multicultural Affairs Council at Chico State, the festival celebrates the diversity of cultures present in Chico through campus and community unity.
Free of charge, the International Festival will feature musicians, student performers, international food vendors and cultural arts and crafts booths. Booths will be sponsored both by Chico State organizations and local vendors.
There will be live performances by Chico’s own Pub Scouts and Los Papi Chulos.

Ms. President: A Discussion on Women and Politics, April 29
The Associated Students Legislative Affairs Council presents, Ms. President: A Discussion on Women and Politics. This engaging discussion is set to take place Wed., April 29 at 1pm in the Cross-Cultural Leadership Center, found in Meriam Library room 172. This is an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to take part in an intriguing discussion on women and politics, gender equality and representation. This discussion will also include topics like the need for courses like “Women and Politics” and programs like the “Women’s Center.” We’ll also discuss the different approaches taken in the pursuit of gender equality and what the best form of representation of women issues is.
The discussion will be facilitated by Jammie Jelks, the AS Director of Legislative Affairs. Joining Jammie will be staff from the AS Women’s Center, the department of multicultural gender studies, the political science department, the Cross-Cultural Leadership Center and many others. This diverse group will share ideas about women and politics, and make it all the more fun.

Dr. Kathleen F. Gabriel, author of highly acclaimed book, Teaching Unprepared Students: Strategies for Promoting Success and Retention in Higher Education invites you to attend part two of this series.
The second 90-minute session (April 24) will deal specifically with strategies that relate to determining whether or not the majority of students are actually learning the material before the midterms (or finals) are given. Interweaving informal and formative assessments throughout lectures and class discussions can not only kindle students’ enthusiasm, but can also promote student learning. Several different types of assessment techniques (with feedback) will be presented which can be easily integrated into any class.

Did you know academic departments’ registration processes affect student fees and financial aid? This session provides system information and discussion about potential student service-academic “collision” points. This will help departments prevent student enrollment and fee problems and enhances proactive customer service.
This workshop is recommended for Academic department ASC’s, advisors in colleges, academic advising programs, international programs, and other staff involved in student enrollment, fee payment, financial aid, or other advising. This course is also a Supervisory Development Training certificate elective. Seating is limited, so please register early.

The Power Point 2007 workshop will teach workshop attendees how to create a simple Power Point presentation from a template, by using AutoContent Wizard and by using existing slides. Workshop attendees will learn to modify, format and customize their slides for presentations. They will also learn how to create hyperlinks and to format a PowerPoint presentation for the Web. They will learn printing techniques, how to deliver their presentation as well as how to manage their PowerPoint presentation files.
