Health and Community Services Students Win First ‘College Bowl’ Competition
California State University, Chico students from the Department of Health and Community Services won a first-of-its-kind “College Bowl” competition April 25 sponsored by The California Association of Healthcare Leaders (CAHL), a chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
A team of four CSU, Chico undergraduates beat a team of graduate students from host school University of San Francisco in the inaugural Health Services Administration College Bowl.
The competition—in the fashion of some TV quiz shows—was designed to sharpen and test the skills of the universities’ healthcare management programs. Students fielded questions in 11 healthcare topic categories: governance and organizational structure, human resources, finance, healthcare technology and information management, quality and performance improvement, laws and regulations, professionalism and ethics, healthcare, management and business.

Lecture: Sex Slaves and the Johns Who Buy Them: Is it Right to Control Demand in a Consumer's Market? - May 6
Wed., May 6
PAC 134
7:30pm
Dr. Kate Transchel, Department of History
Dr. Transchel has been researching the trade in flesh from the former Soviet Union for the last eight years. Having returned in January from a four-month research trip to Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, and Latvia, Transchel explores the nature of the sex trade — the women and children trapped in it, the traffickers profiting from it, and the johns creating the demand for it. In economic parlance, women are the commodity — the supply side of the equation. Embedded on the supply side are “push” factors: extreme poverty, lack of education, lack of opportunities, a desire to improve one’s desperate life. On the demand side are men who use and abuse prostituted women and children. It is the demand that fuels the trade in flesh. In a consumer society, do we have the right — or even the obligation — to control demand?
