Book Publishing a Unique Teaching Strategy for Future Health Educators
Mark Tomita, Department of Health and Community Services, teaches students to meet the technological challenges in public health education through the development of hardcopy books. Tomita, who teaches Computer Applications in Health Education (HCSV 260), has the editing help of colleague Vic Sbarbaro.
“The students take a project from scratch all the way to marketing of the product. The students must write content for the book, format the book, design a book cover based on the target population, learn about how to obtain ISBNs and barcodes, and how to subcontract the book printing to online book printing companies,” said Tomita. “Essentially, they must know how to publish a book when they are done.”
Along the way, they learn the basics of desktop publishing programs such as Word and Photoshop and how to use storytelling teaching strategies in health education. One Hundred and sixteen students worked on four books during the 2008-2009 academic year. The project was funded by a College of Behavioral and Social Sciences Strategic Performance Grant and Faculty Professional Development funds.

Marketing and Design Students Will Present Campaign to Encourage Healthy Drinking Behavior, May 7
The American Advertising Federation-National Student Advertising Competition (AAF-NSAC) team will make its “final” presentation today at 5:30pm in PAC-134.
The Chico State team finished in 2nd Place to UC Berkeley at the AAF-NSAC Region #14 competitions at UC Berkeley on April 17.
Many campus personnel have requested one more “live” performance from this group based on all their local publicity over the last two weeks.
The challenge from our major client, The Century Council, was to develop an integrated communications campaign to combat dangerous over consumption (binge drinking) of alcohol by college students, where each one of the components (tactics) could be implemented independently, if needed, and still be effective. Thus, students from 180 universities throughout the U.S. were asked to address a social issue that will promote a “positive behavioral change” among college students in an environment where there exists a “culture of drinking.”
The Chico State team, comprised of marketing, graphic design and media arts students conducted extensive research and developed a “big idea” centered upon awareness as a primary element in behavioral change. This presentation is culmination of two semesters work by over thirty talented students.
For more information contact either Bill McGowan 898-4182 or Alan Rellaford 898-4776. The complete news release is available online.
