Geologist/Environmental Scientist Compiles Data on High-Altitude Wind as Renewable Energy Source
Cristina Archer, faculty in the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences at California State University, Chico, has collaborated with Ken Caldeira of the Carnegie Institution’s Department of Global Ecology to compile the first-ever global survey of wind energy at high altitudes.
Archer is a world expert in wind power and has done considerable research on mapping the wind resource near the ground. Also a meteorologist, Archer is interested in large-scale flows in the atmosphere. She is the author of a paper on jet streams and how they are slowly shifting toward the earth’s poles. Archer said, “Linking wind power and jet streams was a natural evolution in my research. Ken Caldeira, who was my former supervisor at the Department of Global Ecology, had looked at high-altitude winds in the past and was interested in moving forward with this idea, so we agreed to collaborate on the research.”
The two researchers used 28 years of public data from the National Center for Environmental Prediction and the Department of Energy to assess the potential for wind power. They transformed the data in such a way that they could extract information regarding wind power density at each level in the atmosphere.

Campus Parking Update
With the completion of the Gateway Science Museum this Fall, parking on the west side of the campus around Modoc and AJH will experience some changes. Permits will still be required in these lots from 7:30am - 10pm, Monday-Friday. A new permit dispenser will be installed this summer for use in the Fall by Gateway guests and the campus community. The new parking dispenser located directly in front of the museum will provide easy access for hourly permits. The parking in the new museum lot will include approximately 18 to 20 new “R4” stalls with at least 8 to 10 “Museum Only” spaces. The “R4” stalls will be for general use after 4pm every day.
The AJH lots will also have a few changes. The campus will implement a corresponding increase in the number of “R4” stalls in the back parking lot of AJH with new “FS” and motorcycle stalls in the AJH circle. The change will make our parking stalls uniformly consistent by use.
The visitor parking at Sapp Hall will be converted to reserved parking for their customers. The five stalls previously designated for visitors will now be reserved between 7:30am-5:00pm for Sapp Hall usage only. After 5pm these stalls will open up for use by other campus parking permits until 10pm.
These parking changes will provide alternatives for faculty and staff while still maintaining accessibility for guests, students, and the general public.
Please remember that all campus parking lots have permit requirement from 7:30am - 10pm, Monday-Friday even during the summer.
