Nigeria Wins SAGE Global Entrepreneurship Competition in Brazil

For the third straight year, a Nigerian school team has won the Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship (SAGE) World Cup tournament, held Aug. 9-2 in Brasilia, Brazil.

SAGE was founded by California State University, Chico business professor Curt DeBerg in 2006. He and seven College of Business students organized this year’s tournament, which included student national champion teams from 14 high schools representing 10 countries.

The two U.S. teams, from Holy Angels Academy in Buffalo, N.Y., and Benicia High School from Benicia, earned the right to represent the United States by placing first and second, respectively, at the SAGE USA national tournament in San Francisco in May. In the World Cup tournament, the Holy Angels Academy team finished third behind the first- and second-place teams, both from Nigeria.

Campus Notice: Death of Elagrace Reekie, Professor Emerita, Nursing

Elagrace Reekie, 80, retired administrator from the School of Nursing, passed away on Aug. 13 after a brief illness. She was born Jan. 10, 1929. She had lived in Magalia since the time of her retirement.

Reekie received her doctorate from the University of Washington in 1970. Prior to her teaching career, she was a public health nurse in Seattle. She taught at Jamestown College, the University of Washington, and Deaconess Hospital before coming to Chico.

She came to Chico State in 1971 as the associate dean of Nursing and retired in 1999.

Reekie was an expert in nursing accreditation and consulted with nursing programs to help them achieve national accreditation (these included Minot State and Jamestown College in North Dakota and Southern Oregon State in Ashland). In 1975, she developed an external degree program for registered nurses to attain their Bachelor degrees at Chico State, offering courses on the Shasta and Yuba College campuses. This program eventually evolved into the current online degree program.

Reekie was the coordinator for the School of Nursing master’s program in the 1970s, and mentored many students through their master’s theses. For many years, she taught public health nursing, nursing research, and strategies for working with developmentally disabled children.

“Elagrace was a visionary, always looking at innovations in nursing,” said Sherry Fox, director of the School of Nursing. “She always presented a positive perspective in dealing with problems.”

The flag on Kendall Hall Lawn will be lowered tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 21 in her honor.

Proposal Submission/Approval Deadlines

EO 890 and EM 07-13 require that prior to submission to funders, all proposals for external funding receive approval through the campus clearance process coordinated by the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (RESP).

Due to the volume of proposals submitted for external funding, RESP staff need sufficient time to review proposals and budgets and then secure the required campus approvals from deans, department chairs and project directors. This is particularly critical during the 09/10 academic year.

In order to accommodate the change in work schedules created by the furlough requirement RESP is changing the EO 890 approval process. The deadline for approvals is extended to 72 hours rather than the previous 48 hours.

Please contact RESP as soon as you have identified a funding opportunity. Doing so guarantees access to the full range of RESP services and the time needed to obtain campus approvals prior to submission deadlines.

Your RESP development specialist will need a draft narrative and line item budget no later than fourteen (14) days prior to the submission deadline. If a proposal arrives later than this deadline, RESP cannot guarantee timely submission.

When electronic proposal submission is required, additional advance time may be required to meet the submission deadline.

Retirement Open House for Amy Boles, Aug. 21

Amy Boles is retiring after 33 years with the university. She spent the last 11 years in the President’s office as the President’s personal assistant and aide. Amy is retiring in much the same way she has worked here at the University, dedicated, hard working, and without fan fare. Her plans in retirement include travel, outdoor activities, working on home improvement projects, and providing “proper direction” to her husband who also has retired from State service. Please join us in the President’s Office (Kendall 105) from 2pm to 4pm on Friday, Aug. 21, 2009, for an open house and Amy’s last day, to celebrate (or in our case to lament) Amy’s retirement from the University. She will be greatly missed as both a colleague and a friend.

We will miss you Amy. Paul Zingg, Karla Zimmerlee, Sue Hedrick and Donna Gauthier.

President's Convocation, TODAY

To: Faculty and Staff

From: Paul J. Zingg
President

Subject: President’s Convocation
Thurs., Aug. 20, 2009, 3:30pm, PAC 144

The President’s Convocation this year will be on Thurs., Aug. 20, at 3:30pm in Harlen Adams Theatre, PAC 144. This is an occasion to share impressions and perspectives with the University community, something which I very much look forward to doing after my five and a half years with you. A reception will follow in the PAC Courtyard.

I ask that managers and supervisors allow staff reporting to them to attend, within the limits of safety and good sense, so that they may participate in this event.
