Farm to School: Organic Vegetable Garden Supports Community

The Organic Vegetable Project at California State University, Chico has increased production to accommodate students at CSU, Chico as well as local schools in partnership with the program. The Organic Vegetable Project (OVP), initiated in 2007, has expanded their garden area to over four times its original size in the last two years.

Currently farming two acres of land, the OVP has been allotted up to 10 acres at the CSU, Chico farm by the College of Agriculture. With their recent expansion in production the OVP hopes to attract more funding, volunteers and interest in the program to grow more organic produce on the land made available to them.

The OVP is committed to growing healthy and nutritious organic produce using small-scale agricultural techniques. “We grow the majority of our food for Chico State and local schools,” said Katie Fugnetti, field manager for the Organic Vegetable Project. “With the farm-to-schools approach we can teach the benefits of small-scale organic farming to students and provide nutritious and wholesome foods to them.”

CSU, Chico Associated Students Pledge Zero Waste

The Associated Students (AS) at California State University, Chico has made a formal commitment to become a Zero Waste organization by the year 2015. With this goal as their beacon, the AS will gradually reduce waste generated by the organization each year in order to achieve a waste diversion rate of 90 percent or better by 2015.

No other campus in the California State University system has made a commitment to Zero Waste. Already leaders of the sustainability movement in the CSU system, CSU, Chico’s Associated Students organization hopes to use this corporate goal as an example, encouraging the university and other CSU campuses to commit to a zero waste resolution as well. The University of California adopted a Zero Waste resolution in 2008, with their complete diversion goal aimed for 2020.

A waste characterization analysis of the Bell Memorial Union conducted April 15-17 showed a current diversion rate of 65 percent but also showed that the majority of waste generated had potential to be diverted through composting or recycling.

The complete news release is available online.

Important Information Regarding Mailing Services

The Shipping and Receiving department will not be staffed on campus wide furlough days. Departments should take into account how their deliveries may be affected on furlough days. Special attention should be given to priority, overnight, and expedited deliveries that may be returned to the vendor if delivery is attempted on these days. This factor becomes increasingly important in relation to temperature sensitive items that require refrigeration or freezing.

Many vendors do not utilize companies with local shipping stations. The use of such carriers, when attempting delivery on a furlough day, will result in the truck drivers having an extended layover. In some such cases, the customer will incur charges relating to the unexpected layover.

Please feel free to contact Warehouse Operations at ext. 4320, if you any questions or concerns.

"Going Green" Photography Exhibition

The Museum of Anthropology at CSU, Chico is kicking off their Fall 2009 Academic Season inviting the public to join them in celebrating photography competition winners at an opening night reception and award ceremony at 5pm, Sept. 9 in Kendall Hall. This year’s theme for the annual American Visions Photography Competition was “Going Green,” and after having received over 100 submissions from around the nation, the judges have made their selection of the top 25 to be featured in Kendall Hall’s rotunda through Sept. 25.

Chico local Douglas Churchill ranked first place among entries from photographers across the nation and will be awarded Best in Show and be granted the $500 Valene Smith Award for Excellence in Visual Anthropology—an honor never before given to a local artist.

Submissions were judged and chosen based on their adherence to the “green” theme and span diverse yet relevant subjects from human ecological awareness, sustainable technological innovations, and healthy lifestyle choices to even the natural beauty of our planet. Kendall Hall will be open Monday - Friday from 8am to 5pm throughout the exhibition.
