Events for 2009-2010 Book in Common, “The Soloist,” Begin Sept. 17 at Chico City Plaza
Events complementing the 2009-2010 community Book in Common begin in Chico on Thursday, Sept. 17 when Mayor Ann Schwab and Supervisor Maureen Kirk read proclamations declaring Steve Lopez’s “The Soloist” a community read.
Festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Chico City Plaza with cellist Will Buchholz playing music from the book and others reading excerpts.
William Loker, dean of Undergraduate Education at California State University, Chico, applauds the community commitment to the Book in Common. “For years, we enjoyed the benefits of a common reading on campus, and we are pleased that this is a way that the whole community can connect. We have been beyond pleased. It has been inspiring to work with the many agencies, businesses and individuals who have joined in this year to generate discussion about issues raised in ‘The Soloist.’”

Committee on Arts and Lectures Solicits Proposals
The Committee on Arts and Lectures solicits proposals to bring guest lecturers, performers, and artists to campus. We wish to empower students and faculty to create small, mobile learning environments, in the company of guests of their own choosing, and we encourage them to move across departmental boundaries in the process. The Committee seeks proposals in the $500 to $1500 range; while these awards are small, they should be sufficient to entice that young scholar you saw at that conference last summer to visit our campus to share their ideas with a small group of us. Because funds are limited, it is expected that the host department will also provide resources.
The Committee is currently soliciting proposals for the 2009/10 academic year; funding requests through February of 2010 will be considered at a CAL meeting held the 2nd week of October — to be considered requests must be received by October 9. If you have questions please email the Co-Chair at kcushing@csuchico.edu. Only one proposal review and funding meeting will be held this semester so it is important that you get your proposal in promptly. Funding is typically awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, after considering the merit of the proposal.

University Film Series: THE MIRROR (Andrei Tarkovsky, Russia, 1975), Sept. 29
University Film Series
Tuesdays at 7:30pm
Ayres 106 (Little Theatre)
$3 donation appreciated
Sept. 29
The Mirror (Zerkalo) (1975, Russia) 106 min.
Directed by Andrei Tarkovsky.
Sponsored by the Humanities Center and introduced by Troy Jollimore, Philosophy and Humanities Center*
Andrei Tarkovsky, the acclaimed master of Soviet cinema, takes a moving and personal turn with this striking meditation on life in Russia during the bleak days of WW II. The Mirror is not just the display of a film director at the peak of his unique powers. As an homage to the innocence of childhood, it tells an enigmatic tale that is both gripping and horrifying. Tarkovsky uses his own coming-of-age experiences, himself “mirror”-ed, to convey the mood and action that dominated a country ravaged by war. Through a fascinating two-tiered time frame, the director blends his own harsh childhood with an adult life that is troubled and broken. Powerful images—a mother faced with political terror, a divorcing couple’s quarrel—are underscored by Tarkovsky’s masterful manipulation of film stocks and recorded sound. The Mirror becomes a stream-of-consciousness, nostalgic visions of childhood mixed with slow-motion dream sequences and stark WW II newsreels. Tarkovsky’s The Mirror is ultimately as much a window through the filmmaker’s gaze as it is a reflection of his personal passions and ideals.
*Part of the Humanities Center’s year-long theme “Memory, Nostalgia, Ruins.”
