Gillian Welch is coming to Chico, Oct. 4

Chico Performances is bringing the edgy lyrics and guitar playing of Gillian Welch to Laxson Auditorium on Sun. Oct. 4 at 7:30pm.

Known for her passionate and personal interpretation of folk, bluegrass, and rock n’ roll, balladeer Gillian Welch rocketed into the national spotlight with her Grammy award-winning contribution to the O Brother, Where Art Thou? masterpiece. She will be accompanied by her longtime partner, guitarist David Rawlings, and this special evening will showcase Welch’s edgy songwriting and warm, rich vocal harmonies. This promises to be another “best show of the year.”

This performance will blend the modern style of a Grammy Award winning artist and the deep rooted culture of American folk music.

Ticket to Gillian Welch’s performance are $27 for Premium, $22 for Adult, $20 for Senior and $16 for Student/Child.

Reminder: Constitution Day Panel Discussion, Sept. 17

In recognition of Constitution Day (Thurs., Sept. 17), the Office of Civic Engagement invites you to attend a panel discussion by three CSU, Chico faculty experts. Here are their topics:

Diana Dwyre — Free Speech and Money: We have a right to free speech, the Constitution says. But should people with lots of money be able to speak so much louder than the rest of us?

Michael Coyle — The Carceral State: The 8th Amendment proscribes “cruel and unusual punishment.” Does it apply to conditions in the U.S. today?

Kimberlee Candela — Guantanamo Bay: Do the “detainees” have Constitutional rights? Who decides?

Join us at 7:30pm on Thurs., Sept. 17 in BMU 210.

Attendance is limited to 120 persons. Come and get a free copy of the Constitution or Bill of Rights.

Chico Performances presents a night of jazz with Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Sept. 18

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra’s 15 jazz soloists, along with trumpeter and musical director Wynton Marsalis, draw from a repertoire that includes original compositions and masterworks by Ellington, Mingus, Coltrane, and others. An extraordinarily versatile orchestra, the JLCO has been called “the greatest large jazz ensemble working today” by the Chicago Tribune. Marsalis, a driving force behind the Orchestra, is a nine-time Grammy Award winner.

This performance is the kick off event for the 16th annual Chico World Music Festival, held at CSU, Chico on Sept. 19 and 20.

Ticket prices are $55 Premium, $50 Adult, $48 Senior, $40 Student/Child.

Student Town Hall, Sept. 28

Associated Students President Joseph Igbineweka is holding a Student Town Hall Meeting on Monday, Sept. 28, 2009 at 5:30pm in Bell Memorial Union 210. Igbineweka has invited Sandra Flake, provost and vice president for academic affairs, Drew Calandrella, vice president for student affairs and Trustee Bob Linscheid to attend and hold an open discussion with students about decisions made by the Board of Trustees over the summer, the university budget and how these things will affect students this year and beyond.

Igbineweka said that he hopes this will give students the opportunity to learn more about the budget issues surrounding the university and gather information on what the university is doing to help the students continue to get a quality education.

Merle Haggard is coming to Chico, Sept. 29

Chico Performances is bringing Country Superstar Merle Haggard to Laxson Auditorium on Tues., Sept. 29 at 7:30pm.

The word “legend” makes an appearance at some point when discussing Merle Haggard. Haggard has made a lasting mark, not just on country music, but on American music as a whole. With more than 65 albums, seven of them gold, Haggard has been nominated 42 times for Country Music Awards. Forty of his singles have held the number-one position on music lists, including “Okie From Muskogee” and “Workin Man Blues.”

This special performance in Laxson will feature Merle along with a 10 member band and they’ll be tearin’ up the stage in true country rock-and-roll style. Haggard will bring his outstanding vocal and lyrical talent that has made him famous and will also showcase his abilities at the guitar and fiddle in the spirit of his country music roots.

Ticket for this once in a lifetime event are $60 for Premium, $55 for Adult/Senior and $45 for Student/Child.

16th Annual Chico World Music Festival, Sept. 19 & 20

Chico Performances is proud to present the 16th annual Chico World Music Festival, scheduled for Sat., Sept. 19 and Sun., Sept. 20. Headlining this year’s festival will be a performance by Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Sept. 18 in Laxson Auditorium. A ticket is required for this performance and can be purchased at the University Box Office, or online at the Web site.

The free daytime festivities for Saturday and Sunday include:
• free daytime performances on Saturday and Sunday with music on 4 stages from 11am to 5pm
• free art classes by Chico Art Center instructors
• free children’s crafts by the Museum of Anthropology
• International artisans, crafts and food booths

The daytime festivities will run both Sat. and Sun. from 11am to 5pm and are free and open to the public.
