Hearst/CSU Trustees’ Award Honors Future Teacher
Ger Thao, who is pursuing her teaching credential through the Integrated Teaching Core program, has received the prestigious 2009 William R. Hearst/CSU Trustee’s Award for Outstanding Achievement.
The Trustees’ Award provides financial support to students who show superior academic performance, community service and personal accomplishments in the face of personal hardship and challenges.
Thao was born in Thailand to Hmong parents and immigrated to the United States at an early age. She started kindergarten in Gridley, not speaking any English. With the assistance of her teachers and the encouragement of her family, Ger not only learned English, but had a distinguished high school academic career and received a President’s Scholar award upon her enrollment as a freshman at California State University, Chico.

Committee on Arts and Lectures Taking Applications
The Committee on Arts and Lectures solicits proposals to bring guest lecturers, performers, and artists to campus. We wish to empower students and faculty to create small, mobile learning environments, in the company of guests of their own choosing, and we encourage them to move across departmental boundaries in the process. The Committee seeks proposals in the $500 to $1500 range; while these awards are small, they should be sufficient to entice that young scholar you saw at that conference last summer to visit our campus to share their ideas with a small group of us. Because funds are limited, it is expected that the host department will also provide resources.
The Committee is currently soliciting proposals for the 2009/10 academic year; funding requests through the 2009-2010 academic year (this is a change from our previous call) will be considered at a CAL meeting held the 2nd week of October) to be considered requests must be received by October 9.
If you have questions please email the Co-Chair at kcushing@csuchico.edu.
Only one proposal review and funding meeting will be held this semester so it is important that you get your proposal in promptly. Funding is typically awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, after considering the merit of the proposal.

Yamato Taiko is coming to Laxson, Oct. 13
Chico Performances is bringing the culture and tradition of Japanese taiko drumming to Laxson Auditorium with Yamato Taiko on Tues., Oct. 13 at 7:30pm.
This Japanese troupe of 10 drummers combines a sense of drama and strong percussion, producing the most “physical” form of music—Taiko drumming. Using instruments such as the huge kettledrum, the side drum, and the tambour, Yamato’s drumming ranges from the delicate patter of raindrops to hammered-out rolling thunder to a slowed-down heartbeat. Yamato combines drums with the timpani, the flute, and colorful, authentic Japanese costumes for an evening of highly charged rhythm.
This performance will have your heart pounding to the beat of Japanese culture and transport you from Laxson to a land far away.
Tickets for this performance are $28 for Premium, $23 for Adult, $21 for Senior, and $16 for Student/Child.
For tickets and more information please visit the Web site or call the University Box office at 530-898-6333.

Holt 171
Dr. Gordon Wolfe from our department will be the speaker. Gordon has received an NSF grant to study organisms in Lassen’s Acidic Lakes. His topic will be on, “Mud, Germs, and Steam: the Boiling Springs Lake Microbial Observatory”.
Extreme environments provide a unique perspective not only on organisms, but on their ecology. Dr. Wolfe will present an overview of a multi-investigator Microbial Observatory project at Lassen Park’s Boiling Springs Lake, a 52 C, pH 2.2 geothermal lake that is North America’s largest hot spring. He will put the site in context with other hydrothermal sites around the world; contrast microbial communities in acidic, hightemperature systems with other aquatic systems; and explain how we are characterizing the prokaryotic, eukaryotic, and viral communities of this unique environment.
