Biologist Collaborates on Hydrocarbon Research

Gordon Wolfe, a professor of biological sciences at California State University, Chico, is part of a team that has been funded by the Office of Emerging Frontiers in Research and Innovation (EFRI) within the National Science Foundation to unlock the power of biocatalysts. Jacqueline V. Shanks of Iowa State University (ISU) heads the research team that includes Basil Nikolau and Tom Bobik of Iowa State and Govind Nadathur of the University of Puerto Rico, in addition to Wolfe.

Wolfe’s share of the grant is $300,000, which will fund research by graduate and undergraduate students, in addition to Wolfe.

The project, “Bioengineering a System for the Direct Production of Biological Hydrocarbons for Biofuels,” will allow researchers to explore what genes and mechanisms are behind the natural production of hydrocarbons by plants, insects and algae and how they may be successfully integrated into a host organism.

Sock it to Me

The Health and Community Services Department is running a sock drive for the homeless from now until Oct. 30.

Foot problems (severe fungal and bacterial infections) are the most common and persistent health problem for the homeless. Clean, dry socks are a major contributor to the prevention of foot problems and the treatment of existing foot problems. Many homeless people have inadequate footwear and do not regularly remove the footwear that they do have because they are afraid it will be stolen and they have nothing to change into. You can drop off new or gently used socks in Butte 607 or call x6661 for them to be picked on campus. If you’d like to make a donation toward the purchase of socks please write the check to CSU, Chico, Health and Community Services Department. One dollar buys one pair of socks. Thank you for your generosity.

University Photography

The University Photographer of 38+ years, Jeff Teeter, will be retiring in November. Due to budgets and the hiring freeze, Academic Technologies will not be able to hire a new university photographer in the near future. Hence, university photography services will be limited by filling in with other staff or students when necessary and available. We suggest if you need photography services that you please provide us with a minimum 2 weeks advance notice. We will do the best we can to accommodate the university’s needs but again, we are limited compared to past availability and services.

To inquire or schedule a photography request at least 2 weeks in advance, please contact Mike Magrey, x6469.

5th Annual Moonlight Safety Walk

Please join President Paul Zingg, The University Public Safety Committee, and other members of the campus community for the 5th Annual Moonlight Safety Walk on Thurs., Oct. 22, 2009.

We will walk, rain or shine, so please bring an umbrella if the forecast calls for rain. As before, the group will divide into four teams, walking the campus to help identify safety hazards, including overgrown foliage, low-level lighting, and tripping dangers. Walkers will meet in the large meeting room in Selvester’s Cafe at 6:30pm for pizza and drinks, before starting the walk. The walk begins at approximately 7pm, and lasts about an hour. This is a great way to help promote a safe campus environment, and to meet other members of the campus community. Those interested in participating can RSVP with Matt Thomas. Feel free to bring any other interested parties.
