Greek Week Brings Multiple Efforts To Benefit the Community
California State University, Chico students are participating this week in Greek Week activities that benefit different organizations and charities in the Chico community and region.
This series of events from Oct. 9 to Oct. 18 is organized by 11 Inter-Fraternity Council fraternities, four Panhellenic sororities and eight Multicultural Greek Council organizations to celebrate participation within the Greek system and promote community involvement.
The week began with a joint effort between the Greek community of CSU, Chico and Butte Youth Now to combat underage drinking. Twenty Greek students teamed-up with Jeremy Wilson of Butte Youth Now to canvass the south side area of downtown Chico, distributing door hangers with suggestions about how to manage and control parties. Tips ranged from giving wristbands for students over 21 to checking student identification upon entry.
The complete news release is available online.

"Two Conceptions of Truth" Dr. Paul Teller, UC Davis
Thurs., Oct. 22
Trinity 100
4pm - 6pm
Reception to follow.
We ordinarily think of truth as an all-or-nothing affair. In this talk, I argue that this conception constitutes an idealization, to be sure one that most often serves us excellently. To see this conception as idealized, consider that we evaluate representations for success generally by how well they represent things the way they are. In the case of analog representations, such as maps, what counts as success is adequate, and so context-relative, precision, and accuracy. I suggest that on a less idealized model of truth, representational success for statements functions more like that for analog representations than we usually appreciate — even in science we never get statements that are both perfectly precise and perfectly accurate. The appearance of completely unqualified truth arises from the circumstance that we use an analog of epistemic contextualism, what I call semantic contextualism, in which we generally operate from “platforms”, collections of representations that are defeasibly treated as “completely adequate”.
Sponsored by Phi Sigma Tau, the Department of Philosophy, and the Associated Students.

A.S. Presents Reredux, Oct. 15
AS Presents is proud to present Re Redux (Didi and Aaron of Brazillian Girls) in the BMU Auditorium on Oct. 15, 2009. Doors open at 7:30pm. The performance will begin at 8pm.
When New York electro/dance band Brazillian Girls was nominated for a 2009 Grammy Award last fall, it seemed an unlikely time for the group to go on hiatus. But singer Sabina Sciubba’s pregnancy and the recent birth of her child meant the group would be on break through this summer. Not ones to sit idly by, keyboardist Didi Gutman and drummer Aaron Johnston created a new project entitled Reredux. For fans of Brazilian Girls and anyone who loves to dance, this is not a show to be missed.
Tickets are available at the University Box Office on 2nd and Normal or at the Web site.
