4th Annual Campus Sustainability Day Event at CSU, Chico Today, 10:00am-2:00pm
AS Sustainability and the Institute for Sustainability Development are co-hosting the 4th annual Campus Sustainability Day event at CSU, Chico on the Trinity Commons Lawn, formerly known as the Free Speech Area. This event is expected to surpass previous events in every aspect, from an increasing number of participants to implementing creative ways to inform faculty and students about sustainable practices taking place on campus.
This event is an opportunity for various campus departments and student organizations to showcase the sustainable practices that have helped to gain recognition for CSU, Chico as a “green campus.” Most participants will feature large visual displays that provide both passive and interactive education and awareness about the importance of sustainability. It will also highlight what the campus is doing to advance sustainability. In addition to the displays, the event will feature music, brief presentations and campus tours.

New Grant Resource Center Deadlines Posted
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs has posted new deadlines from the Grant Resource Center (GRC) on the RESP Web site. There are funding opportunities in the areas of Health and Mental Health, Science and Engineering, Education and Human and Community Development, Arts and Humanities. Please review all the funding categories. There may be collaborative or cross-disciplinary programs described in fields other than your own. New deadlines are posted monthly.
If you don’t find a funding opportunity that matches your need, please contact Marcia Buie who will be happy to help you run a funding search through the GRC.

Shredding and Disposing of Sensitive/Confidential Documents
Recent local news has shown that identity thieves are willing to steal paper documents containing sensitive information. CSU, Chico has services available to help with large scale shredding which provides a secure means to shred and dispose of documents.
• Place sensitive/confidential documents in a SEALED and labeled box including your department name.
• Complete a Service Request Form with Facilities Management and Services to request pick-up and delivery to the Warehouse.
• Warehouse staff will transfer boxes to a secured and locked container for weekly shredding with NorCal Shred.
• Other items of a non-sensitive nature such as mixed office paper, magazines, etc can be picked up and recycled by AS Recycle.
• Printing Services also has an industrial shredder that departments can use for non-sensitive documents and paper by contacting x5992.
If you have any questions or concerns on the shredding and disposing of sensitive and/or confidential documents please don’t hesitate to contact FMS at x4320 or the Information Security Office at x6307.

Nominations for the Paul Maslin Enviromental Stewardship Award
The Environmental Affairs Council needs your Nominations for the Paul Maslin Environmental Stewardship Award.
This award was created in 2001 and given to Paul Maslin (now a professor emeritus in the Department of Biological Sciences) by the Environmental Affairs Council for his work with students along the Big Chico Creek and is now the Director of the Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve (BCCER). Nominations for the Paul Maslin Award are open to faculty, staff, and students who exemplify the characteristics of Paul Maslin.
Past Recipients include Paul Maslin, 2001; Barbara Kopicki, 2002; Monica Chesini, 2003; Jack Rawlins, 2004; Greg Francis, 2005; Scott McNall, 2006; Jillian Buckholz, 2007; Robyn DiFalco, 2008; Eli Goodsell, 2009.
Please submit your nomination for those individuals that you feel should be honored to Taryn Hughey at tear_bear001@hotmail.com no later than 3pm on Oct. 28. Please provide a brief statement with your nomination on why you feel they should be nominated.

Retirement Celebration for Andi Beach, Oct. 28
Please join us in a retirement celebration honoring Andi Beach for 26 years of service on Wed., Oct. 28 from 1pm - 2:30pm in Kendall Hall 207/209. There will be a short presentation followed by refreshments. Andi is leaving CSU, Chico to pursue bigger adventures involving travel with her two favorite men; her husband David and her grandson Andrew - stop by and give her a big send off on this new phase of her life.

Turning Away From Hate: A White Supremacist's Story, Nov. 3

Turning Away From Hate: A White Supremacist’s Story, an upcoming program featuring TJ Leyden, a nationally known former neo-Nazi skinhead, organizer, recruiter and propagandist for white supremacist groups, who became a committed advocate against those with whom he had formerly identified. He has worked with the Task Force Against Hate at the Simon Wiesenthal Center, was a featured speaker at the Clinton White House Conference on Hate, and a major contributor to former Governor Gray Davis’ report “Governor’s Advisory Panel on Hate Groups.” He has trained members of the Pentagon, FBI, military, law enforcement, educators, and, at least a million students. He offers an insider’s perspective on hate groups. Mr. Leyden’s message of tolerance and racial understanding is especially relevant in today’s world.
Mr. Leyden’s visit is co-sponsored by the AS Activity Fee Council, Chico Hillel, the Departments of Psychology and Sociology and various off-campus groups.

7th Annual Chico Organic Farming and Food Conference

The 7th Annual Chico Organic Farming and Food Conference will be held from 8:30am until 2:30pm on Wed., Nov. 4 in Room 210 of the Bell Memorial Union on the CSU, Chico Campus and followed by tours of the Organic Vegetable Project and the Organic Dairy from 3pm until 4:30pm on the University Farm.
The conference is sponsored by the CSU, Chico College of Agriculture, Department of Nutrition and Food Science, and the North Valley Chapter of California Certified Organic Farmers. The program is free and open to the public.

The Hobbit is coming to CSU, Chico, Nov. 3
Chico Performances is presenting the larger than life puppet experience, The Hobbit on Nov. 3 in Laxson Auditorium at 7:30pm.
Who hasn’t heard of the superb trilogy of The Lord of the Rings? Using giant theatrical puppets, this production of The Hobbit chronicles the wonderful journey of Bilbo Baggins to Lonely Mountain and his slow change from a provincial hobbit into a world-weary hero. This highly successful adaptation has received standing ovations throughout the world.
This enchanting performance is sure to transport you to a magical world where you can follow along as if you were a part of the story.

This Thursday - 5th Annual Moonlight Safety Walk
Please join President Paul Zingg, The University Public Safety Committee, and other members of the campus community for the 5th Annual Moonlight Safety Walk on Thurs., Oct. 22, 2009. We will walk, rain or shine, so please bring an umbrella if the forecast calls for rain.
As before, the group will divide into four teams, walking the campus to help identify safety hazards, including overgrown foliage, low-level lighting, and tripping dangers. Walkers will meet in the large meeting room in Selvester’s Cafe at 6:30pm for pizza and drinks, before starting the walk. The walk begins at approximately 7pm, and lasts about an hour. This is a great way to help promote a safe campus environment, and to meet other members of the campus community. Those interested in participating can RSVP with Matt Thomas. Feel free to bring any other interested parties

Join Chico Performances to Welcome Daryl Hannah, Actress, Environmentalist & On the Creek Lecture Series Speaker, Nov. 6
Chico Performances and Klean Kanteen present Daryl Hannah, actress, environmentalist and On the Creek Lecture Series speaker, in a presentation entitled The Solution Revolution on Friday, Nov. 6, 2009 at 7:30pm in Laxson Auditorium.
Daryl Hannah has been committed to promoting a “low impact” lifestyle for over 20 years. Hannah was recently invited by the United Nations to address members of the Global Climate Crisis session and has spoken at the UN Global Business Conference on the environment, as well as appearing at many other national conferences. Hannah repeatedly appears on television with her sustainability focus, has hosted and produced several videos, and has written articles that teach how to be “green.”
This discussion on sustainability is sponsored by Klean Kanteen, maker of the original, reusable, stainless steel water bottle.

Career Center - All Majors Career and Internship Fair, Nov. 4
Please encourage students to attend the All Majors Career and Internship Fair on Wed., Nov. 4, 2009 from 10am - 2pm in the BMU auditorium. They will have access to valuable information about career and internship opportunities and can interact with representatives from business organizations and government and non-profit agencies.
Employers are looking to hire graduating seniors for career positions and undergrads for internships. A list of employers attending is available online. New employers are registering daily.

Fee Waiver Applications
The Fee Waiver Application period for the Spring 2010 semester is from OCTOBER 5, 2009 through NOVEMBER 6, 2009.
You can find information on the Program, the requirements, eligibility guidelines, the application, and other required forms at the following site. To ensure quick processing, please obtain all required signatures and complete ALL questions on the form before delivering to the Payroll and Benefits office, Kendall Hall Room 222. Incomplete forms will be returned to the employee and approval may be delayed. If you are eligible for fee waiver and are not using the fee waiver for yourself, you may be able to transfer it to an eligible spouse, domestic partner, or dependent child who is matriculating towards a degree or teaching credential at any of the CSU campuses at greatly reduced rates.
PLEASE NOTE: All Fee Waiver Applications for the Spring 2010 semester must be completed and returned to the Payroll and Benefits office, Kendall Hall Room 222, NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2009. CELT Workshop on Incorporating Civic Engagement, TODAY
The new director of Civic Engagement, Dr. Michael Briand, will be speaking on the meaning and value of promoting civic awareness and community involvement among students today from 2pm - 3pm in MLIB 031. This is the second in the fall CELT Teaching Excellence series. All are welcome.
CELT is also launching a book club beginning Nov. 13 from 2pm - 3pm in MLIB 171 to which you are invited. We will be exploring the book, “What the Best College Teachers Do” by Ken Bain. Free copies to all participants. We will have a second discussion meeting on Dec. 2 followed by three in the spring. If you are not familiar with this amazing educator, you can get a video of a presentation in the CELT Office, 171 MLIB.
Save the date: the last Teaching Excellence series presentation of the semester will be on Nov. 18, 2pm - 3pm, in MLIB 031 on “A Universal Design for Learning.”

Free Medicare Workshop
The open enrollment period to change or enroll in a Medicare prescription drug plan known as Part D begins Nov. 15. HICAP will be bringing information to the community regarding these changes. Information about ways to save on Medicare premiums, co-payments and the Part D costs will be available. HICAP staff and counselors will be available to help you enroll in a Part D plan or the program to reduce your costs.

The Excel I 2007 workshop is an introduction and overview of the concepts and components of worksheets. Workshop attendees will learn how to create, use, format and edit a worksheet. They will learn formatting functions and how to design and build simple formulas. They will also learn how to use cell references to reorganize data. This is a good opportunity for those who already know Excel basics to refresh their skills and learn how to use the Microsoft 2007 Ribbon menus.
