Annual Pumpkin Drop Scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 29

Get in the Halloween spirit at the 22nd Society of Physics Students’ Pumpkin Drop, Thursday, Oct. 29, noon, on the south side of Butte Hall, California State University, Chico.

Legend has it that Galileo Galilei demonstrated his Law of Falling Bodies by climbing to the top of the Tower of Pisa so that he could drop a large ball and a small ball at the same time. Both balls hit the ground together. Physics students will re-enact this great moment in the history of science using pumpkins.

An actor playing Albert Einstein will be the host as actors representing Aristotle, Galileo, and Newton each explain their theories of gravity. For a grand finale, students will use Galileo’s Law of Falling Bodies to drop pumpkins in time to the cannon blasts of Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture.”

The complete news release is available online.

We Need Your Old Lanyards

I’m sure you all have been to many conferences during your professional career. Please look around and see if you have any old lanyards or plastic name tag sleeves that you could kindly donate to the This Way to Sustainability Conference. We too have been hit by the budget crisis, and would like to stick with our sustainable mission by reusing rather than purchasing new.

If you do find some, please either put it in an inter-office envelope and send it through campus mail to AS Sustainability (zip 750) or save an envelope and drop it off at the front desk in BMU 301. To make it exciting, we will keep track of which department or person provides us with the most, and you will receive a special shout out at the Thursday evening Welcome Reception. Thank you for your help.

Humanities Center Tertulia: Jessica Clark, HC's "Memory, Nostalgia, Ruins" theme, Oct. 29

Oct. 29

Jessica Clark, Department of History
“The Ruins of Memory: Tacitus on Roman Antiquity”
Humanities Center Tertulia
4pm - 5:30pm
Trinity 100 and 126*

What connects a memory to the past reality it recalls? In Imperial Rome, this connection was mediated by monuments that presented Rome’s glorious past to its meritorious future, grounding memory in the material world. This commemorative system was challenged when the memories in question were unworthy of monumentalization, however; there was no mechanism for transmitting the traumatic. This talk explores one Roman historian’s search for the means of commemorating civil war amidst the ruins of the past it left behind.

*Part of the Humanities Center’s year-long theme, Memory, Nostalgia, Ruins.

A.S. Presents Country Star Eric Church, Dec. 6

AS Presents is proud to present Eric Church in the BMU Auditorium on Dec. 6, 2009. Doors open at 7:30pm. The performance will begin at 8pm.

When Nashville singer-songwriter Eric Church issued his debut Capitol CD in 2006, he was astonished when he took its songs on the road. Within months, a cult of rabid followers assembled, packing his shows, singing along to every word, driving hundreds of miles to see him and “spreading the gospel” of his extraordinary music. Thanks to Eric Church’s sizable fan base, his first album Sinners Like Me made it into the Top 10 on the country album charts. Carolina, the sophomore album by Eric Church, is another collection of strikingly original songs and sounds. Reflecting the restlessly creative character of its maker, Carolinais even more musically diverse than its illustrious predecessor.

Tickets are available at the University Box Office on 2nd and Normal or online.
