Northstate Public Radio Exceeds its Fall Membership Drive Goal

Thanks to each and every member of the CSU, Chico Campus Community who helped Northstate Public Radio (KCHO 91.7FM, Chico & KFPR 88.9FM, Redding) reach its Fall Membership Drive goal of $160,000.

Over eleven days, the station received over 1,100 pledges of support totaling almost $120,000; funds raised ahead of time during our Silent Drive exceeded $41,000. The McConnell Foundation of Redding challenged the station to meet its goal early by offering an additional $5,000 in honor of Turtle Bay Exploration Park; listeners were able to waive station thank-you gifts and instead send a child to Turtle Bay. The drive reached its goal a full day ahead of schedule.

Northstate Public Radio thanks all of the community ambassadors who visited the station during the drive as well as the scores of volunteers who helped with the phones and administrative tasks. Our greatest thanks go to each person who made a pledge of support to help the publicly-funded operation.

If you did not get a chance to make your pledge, you may reach the station at 898.5896 or you can make your pledge at the Web site.

Professor Howe’s lecture will examine the technological changes that revolutionized American life between 1815 and 1848 and helped transform the United States from what we would call a Third World country into a major power within thirty-three years.

A distinguished historian of the early American republic, Professor Howe is the author or editor of eight books and more than thirty scholarly articles, over a dozen encyclopedia articles, and about fifty book reviews. His specialties include religious and intellectual topics, including the moral and political culture of the Whig party.

The 22nd Annual Pumpkin Drop, Oct. 29

Thurs., Oct. 29
Noon
South side of Butte Hall

Get in the Halloween spirit as the Society of Physics Students presents The Twenty Second Annual Pumpkin Drop. Legend has it that Galileo Galilei demonstrated his Law of Falling Bodies by climbing to the top of the Tower of Pisa so that he could drop a large ball and a small ball at the same time. Both balls hit the ground together. We will re-enact this great moment in the history of science using pumpkins. Albert Einstein will be the host as Aristotle, Galileo, and Newton each explain their theories of gravity. For a grand finale, we will use Galileo’s Law of Falling Bodies to drop pumpkins in time to the cannon blasts of Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture.”

The Pumpkin Drop will be held at high noon on Thurs., Oct. 29 on the south side of Butte Hall. We promise you a smashing good time.

For more information contact Dr. David Kagan, Department of Physics, CSU Chico, 898-6259 or visit the Society of Physics Students at the Web site.

What I Do "Best" Is My Best Work. Nov. 5

Leading others begins with leading ourselves. Just as a good leader will know the strengths of their team members, so we as individuals must know our own strengths and abilities. Choosing and working within our strengths leads to a better contribution to the organization. At the same time we make a deeper contribution at work, we also find greater satisfaction and energy in the work we do. This seminar will allow you to label and better understand your strengths in the workplace. You will leave not only with a new understanding of your abilities but also a plan to use them at work. Your “next step” action plan takes the seminar back to your office.
