University Accepts Students, Raises Funds
for Hurricane Relief Effort

While California State University, Chico accommodates new students displaced by Hurricane Katrina, current students and staff are volunteering to help those in need.

The CSU, Chico Office of Admissions had enrolled two students as of today, Sept. 8, and has inquiries from 5-6 other prospective students affected by Hurricane Katrina. The CSU System has temporarily suspended its standard admissions policies in order to facilitate enrolling students impacted by the hurricane.

Here is a round up of some campus volunteer efforts on behalf of Hurricane Katrina victims and survivors:

Rick Scott, director of Associated Students' Adventure Outings program, left Sept. 5 with six student staff members for Baton Rouge, La., to be deployed in the Gulf Coast region as American Red Cross volunteers. Scott, who is originally from Louisiana, and the students are trained in first aid and wilderness survival. They are expected to be volunteering for a minimum of two weeks. The CSU, Chico students are Erik Horman, Leah Robinson, Kyle Randolph, Nate Millard, Shane Lea, Karah Frizzell and Tyson Rasor.

The Community Action Volunteers in Education (CAVE) is coordinating meetings for campus and community volunteers and acting as a referral location to direct volunteers to the American Red Cross. CAVE is organizing a candlelight vigil for victims and survivors of Katrina, date to be announced. The next volunteers meeting is Tuesday, Sept. 13, 11:30 am to12:30 pm, BMU 210 or location to be announced.

Phi Delta Theta fraternity has teamed up with Sigma Nu fraternity and Alpha Phi sorority to form a Greek Hurricane Relief Coalition to raise money for the American Red Cross' Disaster Relief Fund. Fraternity and sorority members set up tables Sept. 6 on campus to solicit donations and raised approximately $1,900. Members also plan to make classroom presentations and contact local businesses. Three members of Phi Delta Theta fraternity who are Associated Students officers-Commissioner of Community Affairs Dustin Struble, AS Vice President of Facilities and Services Chris Porter and AS President Thomas Whitcher- along with other AS officers have agreed to shave their heads if the Greek Hurricane Relief Coalition is able to raise $15,000 in two weeks. The Greek Coalition will also be accepting checks donations at PO Box 3154 Chico, CA 95928. All checks should be made payable to American Red Cross. General donations can also be made to the American Red Cross office in Chico. Its address is 633 Orange St. #3 Chico, CA 95928.

In other donation efforts around campus, the CSU, Chico Residence Hall Association has begun a fundraising drive to take place Sept. 12-26 at the front desks of the University's residence halls; containers marked "Quarters for Katrina" will be available for donations at the President's faculty and staff reception tomorrow; and the Associated Students Bookstore is now accepting contributions for the American Red Cross Hurricane 2005 Relief at any of the registers within the Associated Students Bookstore.
