Mexico's Political Transition Is Topic of International Forum

The first forum in the spring 2007 series of International Forums at California State University, Chico will be tonight, Jan. 30, at 5 p.m. in Holt 170. Professor Steve Lewis, History, will lead off the series with a talk titled "Democracy for the Few? Mexico's Political Transition in Crisis."

Lewis is the author of "The Ambivalent Revolution: Forging State and Nation in Chiapas, 1910-1945" (Albuquerque, 2005) and the co-editor, with Mary Kay Vaughan, of "The Eagle and the Virgin: National and Cultural Revolution in Mexico" (Durham, 2006).

The forums will be held each Tuesday at 5 p.m. in Holt 170 and are open to the public.

Professor Jim Matray, History, will present the second forum on Feb. 6. It is titled "Needless Quarrel: The U.S. Confrontation with North Korea." Matray is an expert on Korea-U.S. Relations. He is the author of "East Asia and the United States: An Encyclopedia of Relations Since 1784" and "Korea Divided: The 38th Parallel and the Demilitarized Zone."

The third forum, on Feb. 13, will feature guest lecturer Myrna Santiago, professor of history at St. Mary's College in Moraga and author of "The Ecology of Oil: Environment, Labor, and the Mexican Revolution, 1900-1938" (Cambridge, 2006). Her book is an environmental history of Mexico's most important industry.

The fourth forum, on Feb. 20, will be presented by Stewart Oakley, who will discuss the work of the Chico Chapter of Engineers Without Borders, in "Sustainable Sewage Treatment in Tela, Honduras." Engineers Without Borders is a student-led organization that provides CSU, Chico students with an opportunity to use their skills overseas. Most recently, students from Chico have been working in Tela, Honduras.

The topics Africa, China, dying languages and study abroad opportunities will be addressed in subsequent forums.
