Hands On 2: Interactive Science Exhibit
Opens at Chico Museum

Hands On 2, an interactive science exhibit for curious people of all ages, will open August 4 at the Chico Museum. The exhibit, sponsored by the Center for Math and Science Education at California State University, Chico, will run through November 4.

The exhibit includes over 80 original stations involving light, magnets, simple machines, motion, and spinning things. Each station allows participation and illustrates a scientific principle.

"I've selected and designed the exhibits with the goal of entertaining and educating," says LaDawn Haws, professor of math. "I've also written activity guides so teachers can get more out of the museum while they are there and can do follow-up lessons when they get back to the class."

Felix Wolfe, College of Natural Sciences Tech Shop, assisted Haws in building the stations. The Center for Math and Science Education provided materials. The Chico Museum is assisting with publicity, electricity costs, and docents. The museum also schedules public school visits and coordinates volunteers.

Thousands of school children and others visited the first Hands On exhibit at the Chico Museum in 1996. Two more exhibits followed, one at the North Valley Plaza in spring 1998 and one in Oroville in fall 1998.

Many school classes will visit the exhibit after the opening of school August 20. Haws suggests that now is a good time to enjoy the exhibit without crowds. Admission is free, although a donation of $1 per person is suggested.

The exhibit needs volunteer help. Anyone interested can call the museum at 530-891-4336. Schoolteachers can also call the museum to schedule visits for their classes.
