FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Forums Offered to Increase Understanding of the The idea for the forums as a response to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks came from the conviction of Professor Susan Place that understanding events helps formulate appropriate responses. Place is the associate dean for Graduate and International Programs. "The university has a lot of professional expertise and accumulated wisdom, and it can take the lead in opening discussion on topics and issues related to the national tragedy and what is to come. It's important for us to discuss these issues as a community," said Place. In putting together the series, Place included speakers with diverse views possessing a broad range of information and experience. "It is important that a diversity of perspectives be heard," said Place. "I'm dismayed when it seems that we are hearing one narrow viewpoint over and over." The seven forums will be held on Tuesdays, 4-5 p.m., in Ayres 120. Oct. 2: Terrorism, Religion, and Politics Oct. 9: September 11: Ethical Implications Oct. 16: Exploring Non-violent Alternatives to War Oct. 23: Globalization/Destabilization/Localization Oct. 30: US Foreign Policy Issues Nov. 6: Intercultural Communications Nov. 13: Responses to September 11: What Can We Do?
