Survivor Workshop Series Targets First-Year Students

The Survivor Workshop Series targeting freshmen at California State University, Chico focuses on learning the necessary skills and overcoming obstacles of being away from home for the first time. The series is co-sponsored by the Campus Alcohol & Drug Education Center (CADEC), Psychological Counseling & Wellness Center, Student Health Center, University Housing & Food Service and the Residence Hall Association (RHA).

This is the first year that CADEC, the counseling center and the health center have joined together to present a workshop series. Rebecca Berner, project assistant for CADEC, said "Joining forces is going to make the message stronger. All three organizations are interrelated and focus on sending similar messages."

Peer educators, who are current CSU, Chico students, run the workshops. The focus of the workshops is to stay away from the traditional lecture style and make them fun and interactive. Some of the previous workshops have included educating students about available contraceptives by playing birth control bingo and hosting a "mocktail" party which showed students that they can still enjoy themselves at a social gathering without consuming alcoholic drinks.

Workshops are held on Wednesday nights from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Whitney Hall TV Lounge on the CSU, Chico campus. Berner said, "We are really pleased with the turn-out so far. We have had about 75 students at each workshop." All freshmen living in university housing are encouraged to attend.

At each event, students are eligible to win a pair of lift tickets from Mt. Shasta Board & Ski Park. Each workshop they attend, they will be entered to win one of the grand prizes, a $300 airline ticket voucher donated by RHA, or a Glissade Snowboard.

There are three remaining workshops in the Survivor series. On Oct. 10, the topic is "Tired of Eating Coconuts?" This is focused on eating to keep energy up and fatigue down, as well as winning the body image battle. "Jungle Jitters" is the topic for the workshop on Oct. 17, where overcoming test anxiety and dealing with conflict are the issues being discussed. At 7 p.m. on Oct. 24, as part of National Collegiate Alcohol Week, safe sex activist Joel Goldman shares how sex under the influence negatively impacted his life. All students are encouraged to attend this event in the BMU Auditorium on the CSU, Chico campus.
