FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Program Prepares Students for Leadership California State University, Chico's Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) program will host the 2001 Leadership Conference for 400 North Valley junior high and high school students on Oct. 9 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Bell Memorial Union on the CSU, Chico campus.Student leaders of all levels will have the chance to gain leadership skills, explore new activities and share ideas with students from other schools. The conference will cover a variety of topics including public speaking, conflict management, project planning, fundraisers and a lecture from keynote speaker Keith Hawkins, a professional leadership consultant and CSU, Chico graduate. Chela Patterson, associate director of leadership programs, believes leadership development is important because of how complex society has become. Beyond affording students an opportunity to enhance their personal leadership abilities and bring valuable information back to their organizations, the retreat is a chance for students to bond within their organization, network with others and get to know their constituents, said Patterson. Throughout the year LEAD offers a variety of tools and services to improve leadership effectiveness and prepare students for their role in society. A minor in leadership studies is now being offered at CSU, Chico. The goal of the minor is to provide students with an understanding of people, organizations and culture through a broad, interdisciplinary approach. Students are exposed to leadership theory from multiple perspectives and build practical leadership skills. The LEAD program is developed and coordinated by the Student Activities Office and funded by the Revenue Allocation Committee. For further information, contact Lisa DeVore at 530-898-5396. ###
