Recycling and Rubbish Exhibit Opens

Educating Butte County residents about different waste concepts, the Recycling and Rubbish Exhibit (R.A.R.E.) grand opening will be on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 9 a.m. Free tours teach patrons about the dynamics of trash, recycling and American societal views of waste habits.

Located at 3097 Suite #7 Southgate Lane in Chico, R.A.R.E. educates children and adults about environmentally friendly waste practices and introduces patrons to new waste viewpoints. R.A.R.E. consists of 20 hands-on, interactive displays. Sociology, history, economics, archaeology, anthropology and the geosciences are used to relate waste topics to relevant educational subjects.

"Hunter-Gatherer Trash," "Greek Garbage" and "Medieval Rubbish" are display panels that detail trash throughout history. Highlighting the exhibit is a walk-through compost bin and a five-foot tall garbage can filled with recyclables and waste.

"I think it's important for each of us to learn how to change our lifestyles to reduce our waste," R.A.R.E Coordinator Erin Galiger said, "and this exhibit will help children learn how to do this."

The R.A.R.E. tour is designed for elementary students from 3rd to 6th grade. Each tour covers the history of trash, addresses current issues and gives facts about our waste stream. Interactive games that combine recycling and source reduction lessons give a fun recycling message to students.

To schedule a tour for the R.A.R.E. exhibit please contact Erin Galiger at 530-898-5033. The R.A.R.E. coordinator will send an application for tour scheduling. R.A.R.E. is sponsored by the CSU, Chico Environmental Studies Program, Norcal Waste Systems of Butte County, Inc., Butte County, and the Associated Students Recycling Program.
