Rinde Eckert Makes a Quick Visit
10am, Humanities Center Gallery (Trinity 100), February 7
Rinde Eckert, guest of Department of Art professor Michael Bishop, will give a short performance to be followed by discussion at 10am on Feb 7 in the Humanities Center Gallery (Trinity 100). Eckert is in the North State performing his Slow Fire with the Paul Dresher Ensemble at the Mondavi Center in Davis.
The multitalented Eckert is a master vocalist, an innovative composer, and an increasingly well-known writer and director. His collaboration with UC Davis alumnus Steve Mackey, Ravenshead, was named “best new opera of 1998” by USA Today and presented in UC Davis’ Main Theatre in 2000.
Slow Fire, by Eckert and Paul Dresher, gives us a glimpse into the thoughts of one man in isolation. Through operatic aria, speech, frenzied falsetto and declamatory incantations, his language vacillates between common clichés and poetic soliloquy. About the piece, the San Francisco Chronicle wrote: “A rare piece of music theater, a tour de force of intellectual and emotional artistry. It is, to put it simply, a masterpiece” And the San Francisco Examiner wrote: “Outrageously funny, often scary, ingeniously constructed and consistently communicative…a monodrama made monumental.…”
