A film by Chantal Akerman
110 minutes
color/1993
From the East (D’Est)
FROM THE EAST retraces a journey from the end of summer to deepest winter, from East Germany, across Poland and the Baltics, to Moscow. It is a voyage Chantal Akerman wanted to make shortly after the collapse of the Soviet bloc, reconstructing her impressions in a documentary bordering fiction.
By filming “everything that touched me,” Akerman sifts through and fixes upon sounds and images as she follows the thread of this subjective crossing. Without dialogue or commentary, FROM THE EAST is a cinematographic elegy.
“The East is a space of muffled sounds, traversed by the footsteps of passers-by, sporadically pieced by music, laughter, and strange interjections. It is an epidermal space: the camera slides over appearances (‘like a caress,’ says Akerman)…”—San Francisco Film Festival
“One of Akerman’s best films.”—Jonathan Rosenbaum, CHICAGO READER
“If this isn’t a masterpiece, tear the word from your dictionary.”—THE NATION

Remembrance of Things to Come (Le Souvenir d’un avenir)
By Yannick Bellon and Chris Marker
42 minutes / b&w / 2001
“The mode is discursive, descriptive, quick-witted, dense. The tone is at once tender and stoic. A certain tough-guy nostalgia is somehow enhanced by the fact that Marker’s narrator is a woman (Alexandra Stewart) with a calm, lucid voice. As if emboldened by an air of feminine/feline amusement, intimate asides telescope into riffs of wide-ranging speculation.” - Michael Almereyda, Film Comment
“A dizzying, quicksilver imbrication of histories: artistic, political, domestic, cinematic, and (this being Marker) Olympic.” - James Quandt’s Best Films of 2003, Artforum
“Less discursive and more prescribed - albeit by an extraordinary single archive of pictures - than many of Marker’s efforts, REMEMBRANCE is foremost a tribute to a proud career.” - Jessica Winter, The Village Voice
“An ingenious use of still photographs. Marker and Bellon not only prompt us to re-imagine the past, but to rethink what the past means, and grasp that our futures are always with us, in embryo.” - LA Weekly

Conversation on Diversity - From Frigid to Fallen: Can Women Own Their Sexuality?, April 6
A persistent sexism in world cultures holds women in a sexual bind that
declares them either virgins or whores. Such a social construction makes it
difficult for women (and men) to understand and express their sexual
feelings. Diana Flannery and Lyndall Ellingson of Health and Community
Services and Siobhan Frandsen of the Women1s Center will discuss sexual
stereotyping and consider ways to construct healthier and more equitable
sexual relations. Wednesday, April 6, noon, BMU 210
Join us for this stimulating discussion. Bring your lunch. Beverages and
cookies will be served.

Ballroom Dance Club Workshop, April 1
Hello everyone!
The turnout for last week’s dance was incredible! We were so excited to see so many people there. Thank you all for supporting ballroom dance!
This week, the Ballroom Dance Club will be holding its second workshop of the semester. Finn Kraemer and partner will be teaching a Night Club lesson on Friday, April 1 from 7-9 PM in Yolo 213. The cost is only $5 (FREE to club members), but we are requiring that students have experience with the Night Club and that they be very comfortable with the basic steps and several moves before attending this workshop. The pace moves rather quickly and the lesson does not cover the basic steps.
There will also be another lab this Friday from 5-6:30 PM in Yolo 213. This is a FREE event and open to students at all dance levels. Several TAs from various classes will be there to help you with anything you might like to work on and song requests are always welcome.
Hope to see you all on Friday!

What is the purpose of higher education? Is a college degree essentially an economic credential, the hoop through which one must jump in order to position oneself to be gainfully employed? Or, is higher education something that indeed does have intrinsic merit, one best not corrupted by corporate influence of any sort?
