Dr. Andrews, Professor, African-American Studies, University of

Monday, April 11, 4:00 pm, PAC 144 (Harlan Adams Theatre)
Dr. Andrews traveled with a team from NZ to New York to document the
protests surrounding the Republican National Convention. In the process
his team saw how well democracy works and how much it can fail when
power and money are involved. Specifically, his talk will focus on
portraying—-on film—-the many protestors arrested hauled off to jail.

Free and open to the public with a reception to follow in Trinity 100. For information, contact Laird Easton, director, Humanities Center, x4284. Please check out www.csuchico.edu/hfa/hc/guests.html
*Part of the HC’s “War and Culture” theme.
Focusing on three seminal cases of defeat—the South after the Civil War, France in the wake of the Franco-Prussian War, and Germany following World War I—Wolfgang Schivelbusch reveals, in his recent book The Culture of Defeat: On National Trauma, Mourning, and Recovery, the complex psychological and cultural responses of vanquished nations to the experience of loss on the battlefield. Drawing on reactions from every level of society, Schivelbusch charts the narratives defeated nations construct and finds remarkable similarities across cultures. Wolfgang Schivelbusch is an independent historian who divides his time between Berlin and New York. He is the author of The Railway Journey, Disenchanted Night, and Tastes of Paradise, among other books.
“It would be hard to exaggerate the breadth and brilliance of the variations Schivelbusch plays on these themes over fifty years of history and two continents.”–The Nation

A hybrid in both content and style, Paranoia and Contentment (University of Virginia, 2004) is a bold and original investigation into Western intellectual history. John Hampsey approaches paranoia not as a clinical term for an irrational sense of persecution but from a uniquely positive perspective, as a cultural truth—a way of understanding the history of human thought and perhaps the best way to describe Being itself. The book’s analyses and inquiries are joined by anecdotal interludes in which Hampsey applies the conflicting concepts of paranoic and paranoidic to revealing moments in his own life. Hampsey, who earned his PhD from Boston College (1982), has served on the faculties of Boston University and MIT.
