Open Forum of Greek System Review , April 27
As part of the comprehensive review being conducted and because of the high volume of requests to participate in the review of campus social Greek fraternities, the CSU, Chico Greek System Review Task Force has scheduled an open forum. This forum will give individuals an opportunity to let the task force know of their ideas or recommendations. The task force is charged with identifying what changes must be made in the Greek system so the University has confidence it has done everything it can do within its resources to prevent any more student deaths and all abusive behavior by some students in Greek organizations. The University’s Greek system must have the ability to be composed of student organizations that bring prominence to the University in order for it to continue.
The open forum will be held on Wednesday, April 27, from 7 to 9 pm in BMU 210. Speaker time will be limited to two to three minutes.
The task force has broken into subgroups to focus on the following categories:
*Greek organization, which includes: leadership development, recruitment, standards, alcohol use, academics, and service
*Faculty advisors and university policy
*Chapter houses and community service
Individuals may provide information by mail to Vice President for Student Affairs, CSU, Chico, CA 95929-0122 or deliver to the Vice President for Student Affairs office, CSU, Chico, Kendall Hall 108. Information can also be emailed to Mary Quiring at mmartinez-quiring@csuchico.edu. For further information contact, Jim Moon or Mary Quiring at 898-6131.

Diversion Excursion requests your assistance
The UHFS and the AS Recycling program will host their 5th Diversion Excursion (DE) event on May 19 and 20, 2005.
DE is an annual ‘moving-out of the halls’ event for the residence hall areas. Our purpose is to divert reusable and recyclable materials from the landfill, goods which go back into the community through local charities. Student volunteers help divert over 20,000 pounds of goods, and residents learn that what they would normally toss can be either recycled or reused.
We collect non-perishable food, clothing, books, school supplies, partially used sundries, laundry and dish soaps, linens and a variety of other items that the residents normally discard.
We could use your enthusiasm and assistance: Please announce about DE in your classes. We need 90 volunteers to commit to a minimum of two hours, and we will provide a free T-shirt and snacks. Students may earn credits for their classes if professors are willing to offer them. Those students’ time will be recorded. Table leaders deserve more credits since they have more responsibilities. Please contact us for further information.

Will Globalization and Free Trade Destroy the U.S. Work Force?, April 27
Outsourced and Out-Performed: Will Globalization and Free Trade Destroy the U.S. Work Force?
Wednesday, April 27, 7:30 PM, PAC 134
Douglas Ierley, attorney in the International Trade Practice Group of King & Spalding LLP (Washington, DC)
What is “globalization” and what is its relation to “outsourcing” (the practice of turning over responsibility for production of some to all of an organization’s information systems applications and operations to an outside firm)? Is unrestrained international free trade a defensible practice? Is it fair, in particular, to American employees? To what extent are U.S. workers who are losing their jobs due to trade being given the assistance needed to re-tool/transition to new jobs?

Humanities Center Public Lecture
The Culture of Defeat: An Interview with Wolfgang Schivelbusch*
Tuesday April 26 7:30pm
Wismer Theatre (PAC 135)
Free and open to the public with a reception to follow in Trinity 100. For information, contact Laird Easton, director, Humanities Center, x4284. Please check out www.csuchico.edu/hfa/hc/guests.html
*Part of the HC’s “War and Culture” theme.
Focusing on three seminal cases of defeat—the South after the Civil War, France in the wake of the Franco-Prussian War, and Germany following World War I—Wolfgang Schivelbusch reveals, in his recent book The Culture of Defeat: On National Trauma, Mourning, and Recovery, the complex psychological and cultural responses of vanquished nations to the experience of loss on the battlefield. Drawing on reactions from every level of society, Schivelbusch charts the narratives defeated nations construct and finds remarkable similarities across cultures. Wolfgang Schivelbusch is an independent historian who divides his time between Berlin and New York. He is the author of The Railway Journey, Disenchanted Night, and Tastes of Paradise, among other books.
“It would be hard to exaggerate the breadth and brilliance of the variations Schivelbusch plays on these themes over fifty years of history and two continents.”–The Nation
