2005 Spring Musical, May 4-7

2005 Spring Musical: Once Upon a Mattress
May 4-7 at 7:30 p.m.
May 8 at 2 p.m.
Laxson Auditorium

Don’t miss this frolicking send-up of “The Princess and the Pea” directed by Susan Hargrave Pate. In a kingdom long ago and far away, Queen Agravain won’t let anyone in the kingdom get married until her dear son Prince Dauntless is royally matched — and who’s good enough for her son? No one! The sweet-natured King is no help; he was struck dumb with fear of his wife many years ago. Along comes Winifred (call her “Fred”) from the neighboring swamp kingdom to win Prince Dauntless’s hand. To test Fred’s sensitivity, the Queen hatches a devious plot that bears some resemblance to the older fairy tale. Throw in some Keystone Kops chases, the hysterical Spanish Panic, and a minstrel or two, and you have a wacky comedy with lots of heart.

For tickets call x6333.

Photography Competition and Exhibition

The Museum of Anthropology’s Annual Photography Competition and Exhibition is underway. Selected prints will be displayed from September 6 through October 7, 2005 in Kendall Hall and in the Museum.

Theme:
Plants and People: An Ancient Connection
The theme for this year’s photography competition is “ethnobotany,” or the relationships and interactions between people and plants in a cultural context. In many parts of the world, people still rely on plants from their environment for food, medicine, shelter, and household items. In other places and cultures, people find them at supermarkets or farmers’ markets and do not grow, collect, or process them personally.

We would like to see photographs that illustrate this human/plant connection. We are looking for submissions that capture the idea of the interactions of plants and people. From a poignant moment of rapture in a garden to the satisfaction of producing or finding plant foods, to making or using plants for hobby or survival, we wish to showcase and celebrate ethnobotany in its many forms.

Specifications: You may submit up to 9 photographs in the following configurations: 8”×10” 8”×12” 11”×14” Please send unmounted photographs.

Fee: $25.00 for every 3 entries.
Deadline: August 5, 2005
Call 898-5397 for application.
