"The 9th" Performed by North State Symphony, May 14, 15
It has been performed at state funerals, presidential innaugurations, at the end of World Wars I and II, when the Berlin Wall came crashing down, and in the world’s greatest concert halls.
If you have never heard it live, here is your chance! For two performances — May 14th at 7:30 p.m. at Chico’s Laxson Auditorium, and May 15th at 2 p.m. in Redding’s Cascade Theatre — the North State Symphony will play Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 9, Op. 125, in D minor” — also known as “The Choral Symphony” or simply “The 9th” — one of the most spectacular classical music works ever written.
“It is not very often you get to hear all of Beethoven’s ‘Choral Symphony’ live,” noted NSS conducto Kyle Wiley Pickett. “It is an experience not to be missed.” “It is fabulously beautiful music that speaks to the heart of the performer and the audience,” added James Bankhead. Bankhead has conducted the work many times and oversees the North State Symphony as part of his job as Chair of CSU, Chico’s Department of Music.
For the concert the NSS will be joined on stage by the 200-voice CSU, Chico Choral Union and four professional vocal soloists — Daun Hayes, soprano; Bonnie Brooks, mezzo soprano; Mark Beudert, tenor; and Roberto Perlas Gomez, baritone. All in all almost 300 musicians will be on stage
Tickets: x5739.
