Described by The New York Times as “the most prominent female philosopher in America,” Martha Nussbaum, who holds the Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor chair at the University of Chicago, believes that philosophy should be useful, and that philosophers should be, in the words of Seneca, “lawyers for humanity.” The author of eleven books and hundreds of articles, she has played a major role in the rethinking of the place of emotions in Western thought undertaken by philosophers, anthropologists, and cognitive scientists. In her most recent book, Hiding from Humanity: Disgust, Shame, and the Law (Princeton, 2004), she demonstrates how the emotions shape our views on such matters as gay marriage, pornography, and stem cell research.

Blood Drive-Wednesday, Sept. 14 -- your donation can help survivors of Hurricane Katrina
According to BloodSource, an agent for the American Red Cross, many blood centers in the affected states of the Gulf Coast have been flooded or have lost power. Since blood only has a shelf life of five days and many patients need a ready supply of this highly perishable resource, national planning efforts are currently focused on ways to replenish blood banks, among other pressing concerns. With this in mind, Staff Council would like to urge you find the time to donate the gift of life.
Our next Blood Drive will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 14, in BMU 210, from 10 am-3 p.m. All participants will receive a free t-shirt.
Please eat and drink plenty of fluids before arriving; you must be at least 17 years of age, in generally good health and weigh a minimum of 110 lbs. A Donor Card or Photo ID is required. Allow approximately one-hour. For an appointment, call the Staff Council office 898-6156. We hope to see you there.
