ROME, OPEN CITY
Roberto Rossellini, Italy, 1946
English/Italian/German; 105 min; VHS
With Aldo Fabrizi, Anna Magnani
ROME, OPEN CITY, one of the definitive works of the Italian neo-realist period, was shot under extremely difficult circumstances at the end of WWII. Rossellini’s achievement was to place the war, and particularly the resistance to the Nazi occupation of Rome, against the background of everyday domestic life. Using a documentary approach and filming with minimal resources in the streets and apartments of the city, Rossellini achieved an intensity and immediacy that audiences around the world found extraordinarily moving. He also dared to mix the comedy of ordinary life with the pathos of history.
Introduced by Sarah Pike, Religious Studies
The second in six nights of
“1945”—Film and the Memory of the Second World War
