Zapatista Solidarity Group Screening, Oct. 27

The Zapatista Solidarity Group will be screening:

Showdown in Seattle
Year: 1999
Running Time: 150 min

When: Thurs., Oct, 27
Where: Ayres 120 @ 7:00 P.M.

Synopsis:

As Seattle struggles to make sense of the week that was WTO, people are reliving it in packed screenings of the hour-long documentary, “Showdown in Seattle: Five Days That Shook the WTO.” The movie includes footage from hundreds who took to the streets with digital cameras, and the result is a WTO week many Seattleites did not see. Showdown in Seattle is a five part series that features an on-the-ground, non-corporate perspective and analysis you won’t find anywhere else, in addition to incredible footage of police repression and popular resistance.

Each half hour show is made up of segments produced by an unprecedented collaboration of video artists and activists from around the U.S. working under the umbrella of the Independent Media Center. The programs in this series were produced on location in Seattle and satellitecast across the North America on each day of the WTO ministerial. Each show focuses on a general theme (Overview, Labor and Human Rights, Women and Development, Agriculture and Environment, and a Wrap-up) while remaining as fluid as the daily protests. The shows are lively and colorful, full of footage from the streets and meaningful interviews with protest participants. Acclaimed thinkers, such as Michael Parenti, Vandana Shiva andKevin Danaher provide engaging critiques of the WTO, corporate globalization and the corporate-owned media.

Conversation on Diversity: Shifting: Managing Identities, Managing Costs, Oct. 26

Shifting can be seen as both a survival tool and a band aid that, while at times can be helpful, obfuscates larger problems beneath (e.g., racism, sexism, privilege). This workshop will explore the notion of shifting as a survival tool and the costs associated with it (e.g., anxiety, loss of self esteem, diminished identity).

Facilitated by Dr. Kumea Shorter-Gooden
Clinical Psychologist; Coordinator
Multicultural Clinical Psychology Program

"Twelfth Night" Presented, Oct. 26-30

CSU, Chico’s Department of Theatre Arts will stage a production of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night,” Oct. 26-29 at 7:30pm and Oct. 30 at 2:00pm in Harlen Adams Theatre.

“Twelfth Night” begins where the film “Shakespeare in Love” ends. Twins Viola and Sebastian are the sole survivors of a shipwreck off the coast of a strange, foreign land. They are separated, washed ashore on distant beaches with only the clothes on their backs. They make the best of their tenuous situations among the locals, each assuming and mourning the other’s certain death.

Out of this seemingly dire predicament, Shakespeare fashioned one of his most popular and delightful comedies of mistaken identity, masquerade, and misdirected love leading to a celebration of self-discovery and a happy-ever-after (almost) ending.

William J. Johnson, Chair of the Department of Theatre Arts, directs.

Tickets are available at the University Box Office, 898-6333.

Marijke Jorritsma’s You Are Getting Dizzy

In her second visit to the University Film Series, Marijke Jorritsma presents You Are Getting Dizzy, a collection of contemporary experimental videos and films that have caught her eye in the last year while curating the Perceptual Adventure Series at the San Francisco Art Institute. The program plays out like a good mix tape: a collection of seemingly divergent work is woven together, allowing the viewers to forge their own connections.

As if scavenged from the most recent of art school portfolios and free downloads, You Are Getting Dizzy presents new animations, retina-scorching vids, an account of intrapersonal shapeshifting, news from the video game talk show frontier, and more.

Jorritsma is a Chico native who recently graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute. In addition to curating film and video screenings, she makes films and videos, teaches subversive art to urban youth, and has just released her first album as one-half of the experimental electronic duo Eats Tapes.
