Conversation on Diversity: Frat Boys, Sorority Chicks, and Philanthropists: Greek Identities, Nov. 9

Although Greeks are often in the headlines in Chico, most of us have difficulty moving beyond easy stereotypes (positive and/or negative). The Nov. 9 Conversation on Diversity, “Frat Boys, Sorority Chicks, and Philanthropists: Greek Identities,” features panelists from four Greek organizations addressing what having a Greek identity means in their lives. How does being a member of a Greek organization help a person feel more “like her/himself”? Is this especially important in Chico? Are there times when a Greek identity seems to conflict with who a student is (or wants to be)? What privileges does being a Greek give a student directly or indirectly? Are the privileges the same for all Greeks? How are the various Greek organizations similar to and different from one another?

Facilitated by Professor Elizabeth Renfro (Multicultural and Gender Studies); Panelists include Elivin Gueston (Kappa Alpha Psi), Sheila Crawford (Alpha Chi), Rob Felicano (Phi Delta Theta) and Maribel Bravo (Lambda Sigma Gamma).

Join us Wed., Nov. 9 at noon in BMU 303

Beverages and cookies will be served. Contact Tray Robinson at 4764 for additional information.

racial inequalities that permeate our institutions and
communities and affect us all deeply as individuals.

898-4642 Web Site

The fifth in the series “1945”—Film and the Memory of the Second World War
November 15, 2005
Introduced by Peter Hogue, English:
KANAL
by Andrzej Wajda
Poland, 1957
95 minutes, DVD, in English, Polish, and German

The setting for the second film in Wajda’s trilogy about WWII (coming between A Generation and Ashes and Diamonds) is the sewers of Warsaw, through which a group of partisans attempt to make their escape from the Nazis during the 1944 Uprising. This was the film that made Wajda’s name in the West, and it certainly has a unique intensity and gloom, with most of the characters enduring appalling fates.

Zapatista Solidarity Group and Fair Trade Information

Our consumer spending choices affect people’s lives around the world. The products we enjoy are made in conditions that harm workers, communities and the environment. Fair trade brings the benefits of trade into the hands of communities that need it the most. It sets social and environmental standards for international companies and demonstrates that trade can be a vehicle for sustainable development.

The Zapatista Solidarity Group will be tabling at the BMU mall on Wed., Nov. 9 and Fri., Nov. 11 promoting fair trade. Come and ask for your free guide to Fair Trade.
