Hayao Miyazakiユs
Howl’s Moving Castle
hosted by Masami Toku, Art and Art History
Japan 2004 English version 119min DVD Japanese animé
Voices: Jean Simmons, Christian Bale, Lauren Bacall, Billy Crystal, Blythe Danner
Accompanied by a lecture from Mark Hairston, University of Texas, Dallas: “The Role of Girls in Miyazakiユs Films”
While originally imagined by veteran British fantasy writer Diane Wynne Jones, who studied with C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkienムthe real architect of “Howl’s Moving Castle” is Hayao Miyazaki, considered the greatest animator in the world. While Miyazaki uses digital tools, he does so sparingly. Otherwise, his films, including “Princess Mononoke” and the Oscar-winning “Spirited Away”, are richly detailed traditionally animated watercolors. They are a free fall of imagination and realization, in which the familiar looks alien and the alien looks surreal. Castle flies over the head of anyone whose expectations have been stunted by animated Hollywood fare. As with Miyazaki’s other films, Castle is steeped in Japanese culture and traditions, but it is an evocative and detailed reflection of a place that exists only in the mind of its creator.
