Hapa’s groundbreaking music combines the Polynesian past-ballads about the sea and land, all told in harmonic melodies backed by virtuoso guitar—with a good dose of American acoustic folk/rock, Celtic and world influences. This unusual combination creates the essence of Hapa’s sound: “beautiful, fragile, spiritual and powerful,” writes the Los Angeles Times. Their recent album, Maui, showcases guitarist Barry Flanagan and multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Nathan Aweauu, as they embrace the cultures of the South Pacific.

National Print Competition/Exhibition at Three Local Galleries
The 6th Janet Turner National Print Competition and Exhibition opens Feb. 2 and continues through Feb. 28 at three local galleries — CSU, Chico’s Turner Print Museum and University Art Gallery, and the 1078 Gallery on 5th Street in Chico.
The exhibition features prints from around the country selected from over 600 entries.
“Chico State celebrates the art of the print and anticipates, with this biennial exhibition, the printmaking landscape of the 21st century,” said Paul Zingg, president of CSU, Chico. “The Turner Print Competition celebrates an art form as much as the artists who create the images and the printers who enable works of great significance to reach a broader audience.”
Deborah Cornell, head of the Printmaking Department at Boston University College of Fine Arts, and founding director of the Experimental Etching Studio in Boston, is the juror for the 2006 Turner competition. Cornell reviewed over 600 slides to select prints from 60 artists that will be exhibited. She also decided which prints are “purchase-prize winners.”
Purchase-prize prints, announced at a special reception Feb. 9 at 4:30pm in the University Art Gallery, become a permanent part of the Turner Print Collection.
For more information, including hours the various galleries are open, please call x4476.
