University Film Series: DESIGNATED MOURNER (David Hare, Wallace Shawn, Mike Nichols), Feb. 28
University Film Series
Tuesdays, 7:30 pm, Little Theatre (Ayres 106)
Admission FREE ($3 donation suggested)
Feb. 28
Hosted by Troy Jollimore, Department of Philosophy
The Designated Mourner (1997)
95min. VHS. Directed by David Hare, U.K. Screenplay by Wallace Shawn based on Shawn’s play. With Mike Nichols, Miranda Richardson, David de Keyser.
If you think you’re so special because you appreciate the poetry of John Donne and pal around with the literati while the rest of the world dopes itself up on television, think again. For when all is said and done, what does your refined, sensitive, highly educated, superior self — the self that looks down on the rest of humanity — really consist of?
The playwright Wallace Shawn (you saw his philosophical conversation with the director Andre Gregory in Louis Malle’s enthralling 1982 film MY DINNER WITH ANDRE) has reflected long and hard on the ego and its delicate support systems and come up with some diabolically subversive notions. In THE DESIGNATED MOURNER, his exquisitely written dramatic lament for the decline of high culture, he offers a definition of the self that should rattle the defenses of intellectual snobs everywhere.—New York Times, STEPHEN HOLDEN

Humanities Center Gallery in late February/early March: Giety Epting's THE VEIL: DRESSING ROOM
The Humanities Center Gallery is exhibiting an installation by Giety Epting THE VEIL: Dressing Room February 28 through March 9 in the Trinity hallway.
Born in Iran, Epting has resided in Chico for many years. She earned her BA and MA in painting and drawing at CSU, Chico. In her early works and using the human figure, Epting combined two-dimensional images present in traditional Persian miniatures with three-dimensional images from the perspective of Western classical tradition. Her interest in mystical Persian poetry was in evidence through Sufi symbols and calligraphy. More recently she has been interested in minimalism and natural materials.
A long trip to Iran in 2001 sparked Epting’s interest in the symbolic significance of the veils that women wear in countries that enforce laws based upon Islamic fundamentalist ideologies. Epting writes, “The veil is a controversial piece of cloth, a garment fought over by adherents and opponents. In this installation, I am providing the opportunity for all those interested to try on the veil and form an opinion based on personal experience.”
A reception will be held March 2, 6:00-9:00pm. Exhibition hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm. For information, call x4642.

Vague Questions Seeking Specific Answers
Painting by Dennis Coleman
Humanities Center Gallery
February 28-April 27, 2006
The Humanities Center Gallery is exhibiting paintings by Dennis Coleman in Vague Questions Seeking Specific Answers February 28 through April 27 in Trinity 100.
After attending Dayton Art Institute, Coleman earned his BFA in painting at Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. He is now completing his MFA in painting at CSU, Chico, and plans to teach after graduation.
Coleman has been painting for thirty years and feels the content of his work has remained consistent, that is, he says, it “deals with the human condition.” For Vague Questions, Coleman writes, “Momentary and accumulated experiences interest me: environment, culture, and the nature and sequence of events define us. Mark-making is an accounting of these specifics that make up the whole.”
A reception with the artist will be held March 2, 6:00-9:00pm, in conjunction with the concurrent show in the Trinity hallway (Giety Epting’s THE VEIL: Dressing Room). Exhibition hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm. For more information, call x4642.
