Humanities Center Gallery: Giety Epting's THE VEIL: DRESSING ROOM

The Humanities Center Gallery is exhibiting an installation by Giety Epting — THE VEIL: Dressing Room — February 28 through March 9 in the Trinity hallway.

Born in Iran, Epting has resided in Chico for many years. She earned her BA and MA in painting and drawing at CSU, Chico. In her early works and using the human figure, Epting combined two-dimensional images present in traditional Persian miniatures with three-dimensional images from the perspective of Western classical tradition. Her interest in mystical Persian poetry was in evidence through Sufi symbols and calligraphy. More recently she has been interested in minimalism and natural materials.

A long trip to Iran in 2001 sparked Epting’s interest in the symbolic significance of the veils that women wear in countries that enforce laws based upon Islamic fundamentalist ideologies. Epting rites, “The veil is a controversial piece of cloth, a garment fought over by adherents and opponents. In this installation, I am providing the opportunity for all those interested to try on the veil and form an opinion based on personal experience.”

A reception will be held March 2, 6:00-9:00pm. Exhibition hours are Monday through Friday, 8-5. For information, call x4642.

Humanities Center Gallery coming soon: Painting by MFA student Dennis Coleman

Vague Questions Seeking Specific Answers
Painting by Dennis Coleman
Humanities Center Gallery
February 28-April 27, 2006

The Humanities Center Gallery is exhibiting paintings by Dennis Coleman in Vague Questions Seeking Specific Answers February 28 through April 27 in Trinity 100.

After attending Dayton Art Institute, Coleman earned his BFA in painting at Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. He is now completing his MFA in painting at CSU, Chico, and plans to teach after graduation.

Coleman has been painting for thirty years and feels the content of his work has remained consistent, that is, he says, it “deals with the human condition.” For Vague Questions, Coleman writes, “Momentary and accumulated experiences interest me: environment, culture, and the nature and sequence of events define us. Mark-making is an accounting of these specifics that make up the whole.”

A reception with the artist will be held March 2, 6:00-9:00pm, in conjunction with the concurrent show in the Trinity hallway (Giety Epting’s THE VEIL: Dressing Room). Exhibition hours are Monday through Friday, 8-5. For more information, call x4642.

Call for Nominations - Chris Hilbert Outstanding Chico State Friend Award

Christopher Edward Hilbert was a well-loved, down-to-earth young man who lived a very full nineteen years. The last few months before he died in 1994 were strongly associated with CSU, Chico. His time here was short, but he quickly appreciated and personified the best aspects of the Chico experience. He did this through a genuine love for the many new friends he made, the faculty who taught him and aided his learning, and the total experience of the University and the community. He expressed this joy to his family by saying, “I’m so happy here that I just smile all the time.”  His family generously intends for Chris to “live on” by endowing an award of $3,500 annually to be given to a student who exemplifies those qualities which make for a true friend to fellow students and the entire University.

Nomination Guidelines and the application can be found at the Web Site and at the Student Activities office, BMU 213. Please direct questions to CC Carter at cecarter@csuchico.edu or by phone at x5396.

Nominations are due March 24, 2006 to: CC Carter, Student Activities, Zip 755.
