8th Annual Conference, Exploring Sexual Diversities Through Activism, April 22-23
California State University Chico presents its 8th Annual Conference, Exploring Sexual Diversities Through Activism. April 22 and 23.
This year’s conference theme aims to address the multifaceted aspect of gender and its social and cultural constructs. A comedy performance by Monica Palacios, brought to you by SELAC, will commence the weekend on April 21 at 7:00pm. The Conference is a two day event. Each day includes workshops addressing activism, locally and globally, and transgender and sexual diversity issues. The weekend culminates in a Keynote Address by Kate Bornstein, an Author and Performance Artist on Transgender Issues.
Our goal is to encourage discussion about gender diversities. We recognize the importance of creating a safe space to explore and investigate the social construct of sex, gender and sexuality. We hope that participants will leave with a better understanding of the interconnectedness of these forces and how they work to shape our individual lives and our society.
To take part in this Conference or to get more information, please fill out a registration form on our Web Site, call our office at (530)898-5724 or come into our office at the Bell Memorial Union 002.

DEADLINE EXTENDED: Call for Nominations - Chris Hilbert Outstanding Chico State Friend Award
Christopher Edward Hilbert was a well-loved, down-to-earth, young man who lived a very full nineteen years. The last few months before he died in 1994 were strongly associated with CSU, Chico. His time here was short, but he quickly appreciated and personified the best aspects of the Chico experience. He did this through a genuine love for the many new friends he made, the faculty who taught him and aided his learning, and the total experience of the University and the community. He expressed this joy to his family by saying, “I’m so happy here that I just smile all the time.” His family generously intends for Chris to “live on” by endowing an award of $3,500 annually to be given to a student who exemplifies those qualities which make for a true friend to fellow students and the entire University.
Nominations are due March 30, 2006 to: CC Carter, Student Activities, Zip 755.
Award: $3,500 and a commemorative plaque.
Nomination Guidelines and the application can be found at the Web Site and at the Student Activities office, BMU 213. Please direct questions to CC Carter at cecarter@csuchico.edu or by phone at x5396.

DSAU Conference: Speech Play & Verbal Art: Featuring Jamel Shakir, March 29 - May 1
Welcome to the Spring ‘06 Academic Web Conference hosted by CSU, Chico’s Student Artist’s and Performer’s Union (DSAU). While this year’s central theme is Speech Play and Verbal Art, please remember that satellite themes are always welcomed. We are currently interconnecting the most performative and artistic sound-record academic articles with online media libraries/digital media archives, and because no academic database (such as Academic Search Premier, Proquest, and Infotrac) is prepared to archive multimedia articles—we designed our own (www.academicconference.org). The Academic Web Conference and Media Library are interrelated because the academic conferences are based on the multimedia articles archived in the Media Library. We currently archive research presentations, news, music, and spoken word material. So check out what’s new in the online Media Library/Media Archive. Our featured presenter this year is Jamel Malik Shakir.

Production of "Animal Farm" Staged April 4-9, Tickets Still Available
“Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
Lord Acton’s much quoted adage, in a nutshell, is the message of CSU, Chico’s upcoming drama production, “Animal Farm.”
Staged April 4-8 at 7:30pm and April 9 at 2:00pm in Wismer Theatre, “Animal Farm” is based on George Orwell’s novel of the same title.
The play begins in a barn where farm animals, tired of living a life of slavery, plan a revolt for freedom. After breaking away from their human master the animals work on creating a new environment/society where all animals are equal.
CSU, Chico’s production of “Animal Farm” will have many interesting aspects, said director Susan Hargrave Pate, Department of Theatre Arts faculty member. Each of the animal characters in the play has a unique way of displaying their personality through the different costumes designed by Ruth Palmerlee. The set for “Animal Farm,” designed by Marty Gilbert, is arranged to resemble a farm.
“The front row of the audience will be sitting on old benches so they will feel like part of the action,” noted Pate.
Tickets for “Animal Farm” are available at the University Box Office, x6333. Because of the simulated violence in this production, “Animal Farm” is not recommended for children.
