The 22nd Annual American Visions National Photography Juried Competition and Exhibition

The Museum of Anthropology Announces: The 22nd Annual American Visions National Photography Juried Competition and Exhibition

Deadline for Entry: Friday, August 4, 2006
$25.00 per 3 entries

American Indians Today
The modern American Indian has many faces and voices. Frequently, Native Americans are still portrayed in a single, romanticized version of the past, instead of acknowledging the living community to which they belong. In this juried photography competition the museum and its panel of judges seek to recognize the many stories, multiple histories, and diverse communities of America’s indigenous peoples today. We want to see this vitality through portraits, activities, daily life, contemporary and traditional ritual practices, giving expression to their current contributions to our nation.

Selected Prints will be on display in Kendall Hall from September 5,- September 29, 2006.

Contact the museum at 898-5397 for contest rules and specifications.

Conference: Speech Play and Verbal Art, Featuring Jamel Shakir, March 29 - May 1

All are welcomed to the Spring ‘06 Academic Web Conference hosted by CSU, Chico’s Student Artist’s and Performer’s Union. While this year’s central Interdisciplinary theme is Speech Play and Verbal Art, please remember that satellite themes are always welcomed. We currently archive research presentations, news, music, and spoken word material. We are currently interconnecting the most performative and artistic multimedia academic articles with online media libraries/digital media archives, and because no academic database (such as Academic Search Premier, Proquest, and Infotrac) is prepared to archive multimedia articles—we designed our own. So check out what’s new in the online Media Library. All audio and video files are free and instantly playable and/or downloadable with a single click (using high-speed internet). If you like a media file download it now—because it may not be available later. Our featured presenter this year is Jamel Malik Shakir.

LOS ANGELES PLAYS ITSELF (U.S.A., 2003, 169min)
Documentary directed and written by Thom Andersen

Hosted by Peter Hogue, emeritus, Department of English

The film mimics an old-fashioned double feature, with an intermission planted about two-thirds of the way through. It offers clips from 191 American movies, whose only point in common is that they’re set in Los Angeles, and a narration that’s an essay on how movies have treated Andersen’s hometown. Plainspoken and witty, it qualifies as social history, film theory, personal reverie, architectural history and criticism, a bittersweet meditation on automotive transport, a critical history of mass transit in southern California, a wisecracking compilation of local folklore, “a city symphony in reverse,” and a song of nostalgia for lost neighborhoods such as Bunker Hill and unchronicled lifestyles such as those of locals who walk or take buses. Most of all, it qualifies as film criticism on the highest level — analytical, transformative, and political. But it’s also sufficiently engrossing and funny that some viewers won’t find it political or seriously critical at all.—Jonathan Rosenbaum, THE CHICAGO READER

Humanities Center Gallery in May/June: Eileen Macdonald's WORKS ON PAPER

The Humanities Center Gallery is exhibiting works by artist Eileen Macdonald in the show Works on Paper May 2-June 22 in Trinity Hall. Macdonald was born in Scotland. She has been an assistant professor of printmaking and drawing at CSU, Chico, since 2002.

For this show, Macdonald writes: “This body of work has been created entirely by hand with a single sewing needle. Isolating the needle from its intended function and using it exclusively for its mark making potential, provides me with an unconventional drawing tool. By using this laborious and unpredictable process, my accumulation of pinprick punctures simultaneously constructs and demolishes the paper’s surface emphasizing tension and fragility.”

Macdonald has exhibited nationally and internationally, including venues in Japan, South Africa, Canada, England, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Alabama, and Tennessee. She has curated and juried numerous shows as well and been the recipient of various awards and residencies.

The Humanities Center Gallery is open M-F, 8:00am - 5:00pm, May 2-19. Summer hours begin on May 22: M-F, 8:00am - 4:30pm and F, 8:00 - 11:00am. On May 11, 5:00 - 7:00pm, a reception with Eileen Macdonald will be held jointly with Lynnette Krehe, who is showing Solana concurrently at the gallery.

Humanities Center Gallery in May and June: Lynette Krehe

The Humanities Center Gallery is exhibiting works by artist Lynette Krehe in the show Solana May 21-June 22 in Trinity Hall.

Krehe writes: “Solana is based on ‘sight of sound.’ Images of animals running or flying might evoke the sounds of stringed instruments: horses stampede over a road-sized guitar neck, birds appear with violin fragments, and a swarm of rabbits propel over a sea of bass cellos.” The delicate, complex layers in all her work suggest the very old and ethereal as if these were pieces from another time and place recently unearthed.

After earning her BA in painting at CSU, Chico, Krehe became co-director in 1984 of the brand new 1078 Gallery, and then later, while getting her MA in painting here, she became the 1078’s director in 1989. Krehe has shown in nearly 100 exhibitions, mostly on the West Coast, in the past twenty-five years and has received many awards locally.

The gallery is open M-F, 8:00am - 5:00pm, May 2-19. Summer hours begin on May 22: M-F, 8:00am - 4:30pm and F, 8:00am - 11:00am. On May 11, 5:00pm - 7:00pm, a reception with Krehe will be held jointly with Eileen Macdonald, who is showing Works on Paper concurrently at the gallery.

Chico Premiere of a New Documentary: "The Richie Boys"

Come to the Chico premiere of a new documentary … and meet one of the Ritchie Boys … Rudy Michaels. Now an 88-year-old retired lawyer and administrative law judge in Sacramento, Judge Michaels will share his thoughts on the Ritchie Boys of WW II and the film made about them.

The Ritchie Boys were mostly German or Austrian Jews, who fled Hitler’s Europe, came to the United States and after they trained at Camp Ritchie, Maryland, they were sent overseas to fight the Nazis as American soldiers.

“It was October 1944, and Staff Sergeant Rudy Michaels, as part of the American Fifth Armored Division, was about to cross the River Sauer. Behind him was liberated Luxembourg. Ahead, the first German soil he’d set foot on since leaving his homeland six years before as a Jewish refugee. ‘There I was — in the American Army, with a pistol in my hand, two grenades in my belt and a sergeant with a machine gun at my side,’ Michaels says. ‘I bet they didn’t think I’d come back like this!’ “

Thursday, May 11, 2006, 7:00pm, Ayres 120. This event is free and open to the public. Call 530-864-8947 for further information.
