University Film Series: Louis Malle's ZAZIE DANS LE METRO, Sept. 12

Zazie dans le metro (1960, France); Sep. 12, 7:30pm, Ayres 106

89 min. Directed by Louis Malle. Hosted by Laird Easton, Department of History and Humanities Center Director. $3 suggested donation

This is the tale of a little country girl, Zazie, who is put in the care of her uncle while her mother has a weekend with her lover. All Zazie wants to do is ride the Métro, but as it’s closed by strike action, she vents her energy otherwise: tormenting her uncle and his friends, getting into scrapes and encountering various Parisian oddballs, including Trouscallion, who is either a child molester, a policeman, or both, or neither.

With her bob cut, sublimely cheeky face and spot-on, spat-out delivery of her lewd lines Demongeot is a ideal focus for this whirlwind of eccentricity and cinematic invention. The cast—playing characters transferred loyally from Raymond Queneau’s innovative satirical novel—is flamboyance itself, with Zazie’s oversized uncle employed as a female impersonator in a gay club, for starters. Malle incorporates these characters into a setting that is part Paris, part fantasy dreamland, created using constantly changing sets and playful cinematic effects (jump-cuts, sped-up film).

Adopt A Class today - Our Schoolchildren Need Your Support

Chico Performances is now accepting adopters for its 2006-2007 Adopt-A-Class program. Adopt-A-Class is a program that allows businesses and individuals to “adopt” a classroom to go to a field trip at Laxson at no cost to the children, teachers or school. Adopt-A-Class is an excellent opportunity to support children and live performance and because Adopt-A-Class is a non-profit, your donation is a tax write off for you or your business. When you adopt a class you are invited to come to the field trip with your class where you are acknowledged for your donation from the stage before the performance starts.

For more information about the Adopt-A-Class program go to www.chicoperformances.com or contact the University Box Office for an application today at (530) 899-6333.

Humanities Center Gallery: Mabrie Ormes' LISTENING LINES, opening night reception Sept. 7

The Humanities Center Gallery is exhibiting visual works inspired by music by artist Mabrie Ormes in LISTENING LINES September 7-27 in Trinity Hall. Ormes writes, “Over the past twelve years, I have made line drawings of musicians performing at local venues. About five years ago, I began producing paintings based on these drawings, and, most recently, I’ve begun making forays into sculpture.”

Ormes earned her B.A. in literature at Bennington and her M.F.A. at the University of Colorado. Since her last show at the gallery three years ago, she has collaborated with muralist Scott Teeple to make the Wildflower Mural on the bike path south of Chico. This year she spent five months as artist-in-residence for the Paseo Arts District in Oklahoma City. She made 105 oil portraits from life of artists, art collectors, and arts administrators.

The gallery is open M-F, 8:00am - 5:00pm. An opening-night reception with Mabrie Ormes and the music of a jazz quintet including Shegemi Minetaka on piano and Rocky Winslow on trumpet will be held Thursday, September 7, 5:00pm - 7:00pm. It will be preceded with an artist’s talk at 4:00pm. For information, call 898-4642.

Caravaggio (1986, U.K.)

93 min. 16mm. Directed by Derek Jarman. Hosted by Amy Bloch, Department of Art and Art History.

As this film reveals the 17th-century painter’s complex life—his brilliant, nearly blasphemous paintings and flirtations with the underworld—it is also a complex and lucid treatment of Jarman’s major concerns: violence, history, homosexuality, and the relationship between film and painting. “Brooding, sensual…a bold, quirky Caravaggio in pagan and poetic glory.”—Newsweek
