London Semester
Have you always dreamed of studying abroad? Well, one of the best opportunities ever is coming your way. You can go to London this spring semester with 45 other Chico students and two faculty —- Bob Cottrell from History and Rob Davidson from English — and take 12-15 units of Chico courses while living in one of the most vibrant and exciting cities in the world. The program costs include a London flat, admissions to 8 theatre productions, many museums, field trips, computer lab, and much much more. The program ends mid-April, so May grads can still be here to go through graduation. Check out your options at the meeting on Sept. 14 in PAC 134 at 4:00pm.

Music Department Band Promotion
We are hoping that this week, the last week that you can add classes on the portal, the pep band can go around and make some recruiting noise. We are trying to promote all the bands in the music department, and we are going to have a table in the BMU, and we thought that using the pep band as a loud, mobile marketing tool would be both fun and useful. So, starting on Tuesday, we’re going to play at noon for fifteen, twenty minutes or so. If we want to go longer, we can. Meet in the band room - PAC 132 - at 11:45 and bring your horn. We’re just going to walk around the campus, the BMU, etc, and play. Please let me know if you can make it - via email or phone. I’m hoping to play Tuesday, Wednesday, and hopefully Thursday. So, it would be great if you could come out, blow a few notes, and help us bring some new people into the program!

On the Creek Lecture Series: Award-winning Author Joel Bakan Comes to CSU, Chico, Sept. 22
Chico Performances and the Office of the Provost present Joel Bakan, author of the award winning book and documentary “The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power,” on September 29, 2006 in Laxson Auditorium. Bakan’s talk will kick off the On The Creek Lecture Series, a new lecture series this year created to explore sustainability issues that affect the world today. This lecture begins at 7:30pm.
An eminent law professor and legal theorist, Joel Bakan’s widely acclaimed book and documentary, The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power is a darkly amusing account of the institution’s evolution as a legal “person” whose prime directive is to produce ever-increasing profit for its shareholders without legal or moral obligation to the welfare of workers or the environment.
Before the lecture on September 22, there will be a free showing of the documentary “The Corportation.” The documentary will be shown at 4:30pm and 7:oopm in Ayers Hall, room 106, hosted by the College of Business Ethics Initiative and the Sustainable Business Practices program.
Both the lecture and documentary are free, however, a ticket for the lecture is required for admittance. Tickets are available at the University Box Office, 898-6333, 2nd & Normal Streets. For more information go to the Web Site

Great family entertainment by Trout Fishing in America makes its way to CSU, Chico
Trout Fishing in America, the popular musical duo, is coming on September 7, 2006 to Laxson Auditorium on the CSU, Chico campus. Presented by Chico Performances, this wonderful family performance will begin at 7:30pm.
Children’s music Grammy nominees guitarist Ezra Idlet and bassist Keith Grimwood have played together as Trout Fishing in America for 22 years. Their infectious mix of folk, pop, and family music is infused with hints of reggae, Latin, blues, jazz, and classical. A performance by Trout Fishing in America is reminiscent of a vaudeville act or an old-time medicine show - jokes, sing-a-long music, and good humor abound.
Prior to their evening performance, Trout Fishing in America will be performing a Field Trip for many local school children, on Wednesday Sept. 6 at 9:30am and 11:30am. These Field Trip series are for local classes to become acquainted with this wonderful family music group and are located in Laxson Auditorium on the CSU, Chico campus.
Evening Ticket Prices:
Adult $16
Senior $14,
Student/Child $12
Tickets available at the University Box Office, 898-6333, 2nd & Normal Streets

Major Star of Broadway to Appear on Laxson Stage
Are you ready for Carol Channing?
Some people say, “Who is Carol Channing?” Others say, “Really? Carol Channing is coming to Chico? WOW!”
In fact, Chico Performances and the School of the Arts are proud to be present Broadway legend Carol Channing in an unforgettable benefit performance on Sunday, September 10, 2006 at 2:00pm in our own Laxson Auditorium. Don’t miss this one!
Opening for Channing will be students from CSU, Chico’s School of the Arts and Department of Theatre known as the “Off-Broadways.” Channing has teamed with the California State University system to create a big buzz about the arts and will be performing at eight campuses between September 2006 and April 2007. Channing’s performances are dedicated to raising scholarships.
In her Chico appearance the money raised from ticket sales will go to an endowment to create scholarships for musical theater students. Additionally, Channing will be in class working with Musical Theatre students Monday, September 11.
Channing has one of the most easily recognized and highly imitated voices in the world. Her recording of Hello, Dolly! knocked the Beatles off the charts in 1964. A Lifetime Achievement Tony Award (1995), a Tony award, 10 gold albums, and countless Broadway performances, movies, television shows and theater performances make her the quintessential Broadway legend.

University Film Series: Louis Malle's ZAZIE DANS LE METRO, Sept. 12
Zazie dans le metro (1960, France); Sep. 12, 7:30pm, Ayres 106.
89 min. Directed by Louis Malle. Hosted by Laird Easton, Department of History and Humanities Center Director.
$3 suggested donation
This is the tale of a little country girl, Zazie, who is put in the care of her uncle while her mother has a weekend with her lover. All Zazie wants to do is ride the Métro, but as it’s closed by strike action, she vents her energy otherwise: tormenting her uncle and his friends, getting into scrapes and encountering various Parisian oddballs, including Trouscallion, who is either a child molester, a policeman, or both, or neither.
With her bob cut, sublimely cheeky face and spot-on, spat-out delivery of her lewd lines Demongeot is a ideal focus for this whirlwind of eccentricity and cinematic invention. The cast—playing characters transferred loyally from Raymond Queneau’s innovative satirical novel—is flamboyance itself, with Zazie’s oversized uncle employed as a female impersonator in a gay club, for starters. Malle incorporates these characters into a setting that is part Paris, part fantasy dreamland, created using constantly changing sets and playful cinematic effects (jump-cuts, sped-up film).

University Film Series: LA VIE DE BOHEME (Finland/France), Sept. 19
September 19, 2006
University Film Series, 7:30pm, Little Theatre (Ayres 106)
$3 suggested donation
La Vie de Boheme (1992, Finland/France)
100 min. VHS. Directed by Aki Kaurismäki. Co-sponsored and hosted by Sarkis Shmavonian.
Shot in glorious black and white, La Vie de Boheme is a series of bizarre vignettes that reveal the small details in the life of a band of luckless Parisian bohemians: Marcel, a French poet; Schaunard, an Irish composer; and Mimi, the cigarette girl and Rodolfo’s lover.
Based on the famous 19th-century novel that inspired the exquisite Puccini opera, Kaurismäki resets the story in a surprisingly bleak contemporary Paris. It is a melancholic meditation on the lives of artists filled with the director’s trademark black humor. “A cool, funny, very free update of La Boheme….Make no mistake about it, Mr. Kaurismaki is an original, one of the cinema’s most distinctive and idiosyncratic new artists.”—Vincent Canby, The New York Times
