Humanities Center Gallery: MFA Exhibit by Blake Christopher Britton, Sept. 30-Oct. 26

The Humanities Center Gallery is exhibiting a master of fine arts exhibition September 30 through October 26 by Blake Christopher Britton in the two areas of the gallery: The Occupied Territory in Trinity 100 and You and What Army in the Trinity hallway. Britton writes, “The constantly evolving global predicaments are enough to inspire my work into the distant future. I think about mankind from biological and anthropological perspectives; however, I view the social issues addressed in my work as neither preaching nor glorifying.”

Britton earned his BS in physical anthropology at Arizona State. He came to the MFA program here in 2004, where he has been a student of sculpture under the supervision of Michael Bishop. He has exhibited in Los Angeles, Tucson, Phoenix, and Tempe. Britton has won the Sara Frisbee Hamilton Memorial, Mary Ahlquist Memorial, Lotys Sandstorm Gibb, and Francis William Rawle Scholarships while a student here. He has had internships and apprenticeships at the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Manfred Design, Inc., and Arizona Bronze Atelier.

The gallery is open M-F, 8:00am - 5:00pm. A reception will be held Thursday, October 5, 5:00pm - 7:00pm. It will be preceded by an artist’s talk at 4:30pm. For information, call x4642.

Student Zapatista Solidarity Front Film Screenings, Sept. 15

This Friday, 9/15, the Student Zapatista Solidarity Front will be bringing EL CHE: Investigating a Legend to Ayres 120 at 5:00pm.

Come find out who the guy on your shirt is!

Che Guevara, the man with the beret with the star, embodies one of the strongest myths of the 20th century. He was a combination of a saint and an adventurer; somewhere between Don Quixote and a latter-day Jesus Christ. In his relations with Fidel Castro, he is the hero of a tragedy of Shakespearean proportions. Che Guevara became a symbol of an entire generation. Today he is a myth. Some still draw inspiration from him - others condemn him; sometimes bitterly. For all, he is a subject of controversy and passion. This film examines the myth, and contains: His voyages of discovery through Latin America, the meeting with Fidel Castro, when an instantaneous friendship was born, his travels around the world, and footage of his tragic end in Bolivia at age 39.

Next Friday, 9/22, will be V for Vendetta - Ayres 120, 5:00 pm.
