Up 'til Dawn at CSU, Chico
UP ‘TIL DAWN at CSU, Chico is an event that raises money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, located in Memphis, Tennessee. St. Jude is the largest childhood cancer research center in the world, and ground-breaking research findings at St. Jude are shared with doctors and scientists all over the world. The hospital’s daily operating costs are approximately $1,027,832, which are primarily covered by public contributions (from programs such as Up ‘til Dawn). St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatments that are not covered by insurance, and families without insurance are never asked to pay.
Last year (2005/2006), in a record-breaking year for CSU, Chico, more than 850 students raised over $103,000 for the hospital, and this year we plan on raising even more!
Funds are raised by way of a letter-writing party, which will take place on Nov. 13, 2006 in the BMU Auditorium. Participants are asked to attend the event with a list of addresses of family and friends. Once there, pre-written donation letters will be addressed and mailed out with the hope of receiving financial help for the children of St. Jude Hospital . The letter-writing party will include TONS of free food, good music, TONS of raffle prizes, and a whole lot of FUN!

The Humanities Center Gallery is exhibiting a master of fine arts exhibition Sept. 30 through Oct. 26 by Blake Christopher Britton in the two areas of the gallery: The Occupied Territory in Trinity 100 and You and What Army in the Trinity hallway. Britton writes, “The constantly evolving global predicaments are enough to inspire my work into the distant future. I think about mankind from biological and anthropological perspectives; however, I view the social issues addressed in my work as neither preaching nor glorifying.”
Britton earned his BS in physical anthropology at Arizona State. He came to the MFA program here in 2004, where he has been a student of sculpture under the supervision of Michael Bishop. He has exhibited in Los Angeles, Tucson, Phoenix, and Tempe. University Film Series: LUTHER, Oct. 10
LUTHER (1974, U.S.A.)
111 min. VHS. Directed by Guy Green.
Hosted by Lawrence Bryant, Department of History
University Film Series 7:30pm, Little Theatre (Ayres 106)
$3 suggested donation
Stacy Keach, as German cleric Martin Luther, miraculously breathes life and intimacy into one of the most famous social revolutionaries and theological firebrands in world history. Directed by former cinematographer Guy Green, Luther has graceful camerawork that explodes the restricting theatrical proscenium without violating the unity of John Osborne’s original play Look Back in Anger. Luther compresses nearly two decades into a provocative character study that parallels Martin Luther’s deepening religious dilemmas with the irresolvable earthly anxieties that shaped his beliefs and his rebellious search for truth. We’re introduced to Luther as a young monk in 1506, as he defends his vows to his jealous and disapproving father (Patrick McGee). But as Luther’s religious commitment deepens, his faith in an increasingly commercialized, politicized, and spiritually empty Papacy atrophies until, having preached against the medieval Catholic Church’s hypocrisy, he is called to account by the very bishops he must denounce.

Student Zapatista Solidarity Front Film Screenings FRIDAYS
This Friday, Oct. 6, the Student Zapatista Solidarity Front will be bringing THE OIL FACTOR to Ayres 120 at 5pm.
After assessing today’s dwindling oil reserves and skyrocketing use of oil for fuels, plastics and chemicals, “The Oil Factor” questions the motives for the U.S. wars in the Middle-East and Central Asia where 3/4 of the world’s oil and natural gas is located. With exclusive footage shot on location in Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan, the film documents the spiraling violence now engulfing both Iraq and Afghanistan, a country conspicuously absent from the commercial media’s news segments. Interviews gathered throughout the Middle-East, Europe and the United States, including a Bechtel executive in Baghdad, also expose who is cashing in on the tens of billions of dollars requested from congress by the current administration of G. W. Bush. With detailed maps and graphics, The Oil Factor features many experts and personalities such as former Defense Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski, M.I.T. professor Noam Chomsky, the Project for the New American Century Executive Director Gary Schmitt, Coalition Provisional Authority Chairman Paul Bremer, former Pentagon analyst Lt. Col. Karen Kwiatkowski, current Iraqi government official Abdel Aziz Al-Hakim and authors Ahmed Rashid and Michael C. Ruppert.
This is a free event. (But donations are greatly appreciated).
Next Friday, Oct. 13, will be OUTFOXED - (note location change) SSKU 120, 5pm.

On the Creek Lecture Series: Mike Madison, Oct. 16
Chico Performances is proud to present a lecture by Mike Madison on Monday, October 16, 2006 in Ruth Rowland Taylor Recital Hall at 7:30pm.
Madison is appearing as part of the On the Creek Lecture Series, a new series dedicated to exploring sustainability issues that affect the world today.
Predicting the future is often a murky and doubtful business, but there are reasonable ways to go about it. One is to apply the techniques and principles of ecology to analysis of a household, or a bioregion, or a nation. These results can then be projected forward. Madison uses this approach to speculate on the state of the Chico bioregion in the year 2020.
Other speakers in the series include Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Joel Bakan, Denise Low-Weso, and Frances Moore Lappé. The On the Creek Lecture Series is sponsored by Butte College, KZFR, the City of Chico, Office of the President, Office of the Provost, with major funding provided by US Bank.
This lecture is free and open to the public.

"Spine Tingling" Huun Huur Tu Rides Into Laxson Auditorium, Oct. 8
Chico Performances is proud to present Huun Huur Tu: Throat Singers of Tuva on Sunday, Oct. 8, 2006 at 7:30pm in Laxson Auditorium.
“The Tuvans will ride into your brain and leave footprints up and down your spine.” - wrote The San Francisco Bay Guardian in a recent review.
The members of Huun Huur Tu originate from the independent republic of Tuva, bordering Mongolia and they perform an ear-twisting vocal technique called khöömei. A single vocalist produces two or three notes simultaneously, often a low drone along with a high-pitched whistle. The sound is created in the throat region - hence the term “throat singers” - and how it is produced remains a mystery to Western science.
Accompanied by traditional string and percussion instruments such as the igil (vertical fiddle), doshpulur (a banjo-like lute), byzaanchi (a cello-like bowed instrument) and khomuz (the Tuvan jaw harp), the four-member ensemble sings rhythmic cowboy songs that capture the magic of the Siberian steppe. Hunter’s calls, shamanic healing rituals, funeral laments, bear-hunt blessings, lullabies and hymns all reveal glimpses into the enchanting land of Tuva.
Tickets are: Adult $16, Senior $14, Student/Child $12 and are available at the University Box Office, 898-6333, 2nd & Normal Streets. For more information visit Web Site

WoodStock Legend Richie Havens Coming to Laxson Auditorium, Oct. 13
Experience the music of WoodStock legend Richie Havens Friday, Oct. 13, 2006 at 7:30pm in Laxson Auditorium at CSU, Chico, courtesy of Chico Performances.
Richie Havens is gifted with one of the most recognizable voices in popular music. His fiery, poignant, and always soulful singing style has remained unique and ageless since he first emerged from the Greenwich Village folk scene in the 1960s. He has inspired and electrified audiences from Woodstock in 1969 to the Clinton Presidential Inauguration in 1993, coming full circle with the 30th Woodstock Anniversary celebration a few years ago. His most recent album, Grace of the Sun, was released earlier this year.
For three decades, Havens has used his music to convey messages of brotherhood, personal freedom and has devoted his energies to educating young people about ecological issues. With over twenty albums released and a rigorous touring schedule, he continues to view his calling as a high one.

You don’t want to miss out on Robert F. The lecture will begin at 7:30pm in Laxson Auditorium at California State University, Chico, and brought to you by Chico Performances.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s reputation as a resolute defender of the environment stems from a litany of successful legal actions: prosecuting governments and companies for polluting the Hudson River and Long Island Sound; winning settlements for the Hudson Riverkeeper; arguing cases to expand citizen access to the shoreline; and suing sewage treatment plants to force compliance with the Clean Water Act.
