University Film Series: HEDDA GABLER (2004), Oct. 14
Hedda Gabler (2004, U.S.A.)
90 min. VHS. Directed by Paul Willis
University Film Series, 7:30pm, Little Theatre (Ayres 106)
$3 suggested donation Web Site
Paul Willis has turned his modern stage adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s late 19th-century dark classic into an experimental movie. The story opens as Hedda and her naive new husband, George, move into a house he can’t afford but bought anyway, on the expectation of a university appointment and out of blind devotion to his fidgety and snooty wife. The new couple soon learns that George’s old academic rival, a wretched alcoholic, has sobered up and returned to compete with George for his university post. That’s when things turn sour and the characters are drawn down a road that leads them all to an ugly place.
As portrayed by the stellar Heidi Schreck, Hedda is neither victim nor troll, but a little bit of both. Stylistically, Hedda is an impressionistic scrapbook comprised of dialogue, grainy visuals, soundscapes, jiggly camera shots, and strange shifts in speed.
The film was shot on location in a middle class ranch-style house at the end of a cul-de-sac, in a suburban neighborhood in Wenatchee, WA.

Up 'til Dawn Volunteers Wanted
UP ‘TIL DAWN at CSU, Chico is an event that raises money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, located in Memphis Tennessee. St. Jude is the largest childhood cancer research center in the world, and ground-breaking research findings at St. Jude are shared with doctors and scientists all over the world. The hospital’s daily operating costs are approximately $1,027,832, which are primarily covered by public contributions (from programs such as Up ‘til Dawn). St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatments that are not covered by insurance, and families without insurance are never asked to pay.
Last year (2005/2006), in a record-breaking year for CSU, Chico, more than 850 students raised over $103,000 for the hospital, and this year we plan on raising even more. Funds are raised by way of a letter-writing party, which will take place on Nov. 13, 2006 in the BMU Auditorium. Participants are asked to attend the event with a list of addresses of family and friends. Once there, pre-written donation letters will be addressed and mailed out with the hope of receiving financial help for the children of St. Jude Hospital. The letter-writing party will include TONS of free food, good music, TONS of raffle prizes, and a whole lot of FUN!

"Southeast Asian Crossroads", A Talk by Daniel Veidlinger, Nov. 9
BMU314 @ 5pm
Free Event
Southeast Asian Crossroads:Hybrid Identities and Multicultural Polities in the
Middle Ages
Southeast Asia has always been a region at the crossroads. Lying between the two great world civilizations of China and India, it was witness to an unceasing interplay of political, economic and cultural exchanges the likes of which have rarely been seen anywhere else. Host to scores of language groups, religions and customs, Southeast Asians have been challenged to define and re-define themselves countless times over the ages. In a way, early Southeast Asia can be seen as a microcosm of the post-modern predicament. This talk will
explore some of the creative ways by which such a diverse region created a sense of identity out of an array of competing traditions.
Daniel Veidlinger is Assistant Professor of Asian Religions in the Department of Religious Studies, CSU, Chico.
