Humanities Center Gallery: DRAWING ON CLASSICISM by Karl McDade

The Humanities Center Gallery is exhibiting Drawing on Classicism, recent work by Karl McDade, Nov. 6 through Dec. 20, in Trinity Hall. McDade writes, “In this recent series of work, I rely heavily on classical imagery both in terms of form and decoration. I use alterations to a variety of traditional display devices in an attempt to blur the boundaries between art and craft and also sculpture and drawing.”

McDade earned an MFA at Montana State University, Bozeman. He began teaching at Diablo Valley College in 2000. McDade has exhibited in group shows throughout the country and has had solo shows at Diablo Valley College, Becco Gallery and The Leedy-Voulkos Art Center in Kansas City, and North West Missouri State University.

On Monday, Nov. 6, when Drawing on Classicism opens, McDade will give an artist’s talk with a slide show at 2pm in Ayres 201. From 5pm until 7pm, the Humanities Center Gallery — joined by faculty and students from the Department of Art and Art History — will host a reception for McDade in the gallery.

The gallery is open M-F, 8-5 (except on Nov. 10, 23, and 24 when the campus is closed). For information, call x4642.

Student Zapatista Solidarity Front Film Screenings FRIDAYS

This Friday, Oct. 20, the Student Zapatista Solidarity Front will be bringing a double-feature: Chavez: Inside the Coup (aka. The Revolution Will Not Be Televised) and The White House Correspondent’s Dinner w/Stephen Colbert AYRES 120 (note location change), 5pm.

Inside the CIA-backed Venezuelan coup in 2002. While shooting a documentary on Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, an Irish film crew found themselves caught in the middle of an attempted coup by opposition leaders and members of the military (who claimed they were staging a “peaceful, democratic takeover”). While the new, pro-Bush leaders quickly whisked Chavez away to an undisclosed location, hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans poured into the streets, demanding his return - leading to one of the most gripping and suspenseful reversals of fortune ever captured on film. Extra feature: Stephen Colbert says it all at the 2006 White House Correspondents dinner.

This is a free event… but donations are greatly appreciated.

Next Friday, Oct. 27, will be The Fourth World War - an inspiring look at social struggles across the planet - AYRES 120, 5pm.

Humanities Center Gallery: Alumna Janice Porter's SYMPATHY

The Humanities Center Gallery is exhibiting Sympathy, new works on paper by Janice Porter, November 7-30, in the Trinity hallway. Porter writes, “Oddities and unseemly couplings show up in this new series. The poster-sized works are reminiscent of stills from a stage play or movie, and their leading characters pose themselves for sympathetic encounters with the viewer.”

Porter earned her BFA from Kansas City Art Institute. She worked as a graphic designer for non-profits in Minneapolis and is a published children’s book illustrator, with 25 titles in print, including Swing around the Sun (Teachers Choice Booklist), M Is for Minnesota (Minnesota Book Award finalist), Aunt Clara Brown (Colorado Book Award finalist), Hope (CBC Notable Social Studies Trade Book), Family (ABA Pick of the List, Parent’s Choice Award), and Colors of Mexico and Colors of Australia (Chicago Reading Roundtable Award).

This year Porter earned her MFA from CSU, Chico, where she has taught drawing and painting. Porter has exhibited widely in the Chico area and is currently illustrating a children’s book version of the Mexican tale of La Llorona.

The gallery is open M-F, 8-5. A reception will be held Nov. 9, 5-7pm. For information, call x4642.
