Humanities Center: Guest David L. Pike on Subterranean Cities, April 5

David L. Pike “Subterranean Cities: The World Beneath Paris and London, 1800-1945”
April 5 at the Humanities Center, 7:30pm, Trinity 100, reception to follow.
Part of the Humanities Center’s “The Built Environment” theme.

In Subterranean Cities, David L. Pike, professor of comparative literature at American University, explores the representation of underground space in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a period during which technology and heavy industry transformed urban life. The metropolis had long been considered a moral underworld of iniquity and dissolution. As the complex drainage systems, underground railways, utility tunnels, and storage vaults of the modern cityscape superseded the countryside of caverns and mines as the principal location of actual subterranean spaces, ancient and modern converged in a mythic space that was nevertheless rooted in the everyday life of the contemporary city. Writers and artists Felix Nadar and Charles Baudelaire to Charles Dickens and Alice Meynell, Gustave Doré and Victor Hugo, George Gissing and Emile Zola, and Jules Verne and H.G. Wells integrated images of the urban underworld into their portrayals of the anatomy of modern society.

Women Against Violence Film Series Presented by Delta Xi Phi Multicultural Sorority Inc.

The ladies of Delta Xi Phi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. present the Women Against Violence film series showing two award winning documentaries “Bajo Juarez: The City Devouring Its Daughters” on Wed. April 4, 2007 and “Searching for Angela Shelton” on Wed., April 11, 2007. The films will begin at 7pm in Butte 102.

Film Information:
Bajo Juarez: The City Devouring Its Daughters
In an industrial town in Mexico near the US border, hundreds of women have been sexually abused and murdered. As the body count continues to rise, a web of corruption unfolds that reaches the highest levels of Mexican society.

Searching for Angela Shelton
Filmmaker Angela Shelton went on a journey around the United States meeting other
Angela Sheltons in an effort to survey women in America. What she wasn’t prepared for was learning that like herself, 24 out of the 40 Angela Sheltons she spoke to had been victims of rape, domestic violence or child molestation. When the filmmaker finds an Angela Shelton who tracks sexual predators and lives in the same town as the filmmaker’s father the film becomes a very personal journey.

SELAC "Hispanic Noche de Cine Series" Movie Night, March 14

SELAC “Hispanic Noche de Cine Series” presents …

El tiempo de las mariposas (Dominican Republic)
March 14, 7pm
HOLT 268

All movies free and open to general public. All movies shown in Spanish with English subtitles.
All movies shown in HOLT 268 at 7pm.

On November 25, 1960, the bodies of three sisters were found near the bottom of a cliff on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. The official daily ‘El Caribe’ reports that it had been an accident, but it does not mention that a fourth sister lives. Nor does it mention the sisters’ fierce opposition to the General Trujillo’s dictatorship. This is their story: how Minerva started the tragedy by refusing Trujillo; how Patria became an opponent from the church itself; how Maria Teresa joined the revolution through the love. And how they lost their wings, but not their courage. They were Las Mariposas - “The Butterflies”. In the Time of the Butterflies is inspired by the true story of the three Mirabal sisters who, in 1960, were murdered for their part in an underground plot to overthrow the government. This is a tale of courage and sisterhood set in the Dominican Republic during the rise of the Trujillo dictatorship. (source: IMDb)

March 9 at 7:30pm
Sat., March 10 at 2pm & 7:30pm
Sun., March 11 at 2pm
Wismer Theatre

This “backstage” comedy by award-winning Jane Martin skewers the traditions and folklore of life behind the curtain and the pitfalls of staging the classics in community theatre — in Texas this time. Directed by Gail Holbrook, this show has it all: cross-gender casting, offstage romance, unsavory corporate sponsors, the local newspaper critic, and a myriad of eccentric directors and actors. Like Anton Chekhov’s Three Sisters, our leading ladies pursue the true purpose of life. If you believe man cannot live by bread alone…and prefer a little salsa with yours … and love the theatre … this madcap comedy is for you!
