April 10
Dr. Strangelove (U.S.A., 1964) 93 min. Directed by Stanley Kubrick. Hosted by Jason Tannen, Department of Art and Art History and director of the University Art Gallery
Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb was honored by the American Film Institute with the number 3 spot as one of America’s 100 Funniest Movies. The film is producer-director Kubrick’s brilliant, satirical, provocative black comedy/fantasy regarding doomsday and Cold War politics that features an accidental, inadvertent, pre-emptive nuclear attack. This landmark film was a cynical, Monty Python-esque, biting response to the apocalyptic fears of the 1950s. The witty screenplay, co-authored by Kubrick and Terry Southern, was based on Peter George’s novel Red Alert (the U.S. title). Strangelove features numerous sexual images and references including large phallic cigars, mating airplanes, guns, a military general’s impotent “loss of essence”, and the orgasmic atomic bomb that a pilot rides between his legs. Cast: Peter Sellers, George C. Scott, Sterling Hayden.

April 17
Life and Debt (U.S.A., 2001) 86 min. Directed by Stephanie Black. Hosted by Geoff Baker, Department of English
Jamaica, land of sea, sand and sun—and a prime example of the complexities of economic globalization on the world’s developing countries. Using conventional and non-conventional documentary techniques, this searing film dissects the “mechanism of debt” that is destroying local agriculture and industry in Third World countries while substituting them with sweat-shops and cheap imports. With a voice-over narration written by Jamaica Kincaid, adapted from her non-fiction book A Small Place, Life and Debt is an unapologetic look at the “new world order” from the point of view of Jamaican workers, farmers, government and policy officials, who see the reality of globalization from the ground up. The documentary includes interviews with Former Prime Minister Michael Manley, Deputy Director of the International Monetary Fund Stanley Fischer, and short commentary by President of Haiti-Jean-Bertrand Aristide and Former President of Ghana-Jerry Rawlings. But the articulate voices of those impacted by the policies of globalization are foremost.

This film is a good portrait of Castro’s Cuba in the 20 century. The modern life, cities and lots of music, are portrayed in this film about the most controversial island in the Caribbean. A group of legendary Cuban musicians, some as old as in their nineties, were brought together by American musician Ry Cooder to record a CD. In this film, we see and hear some of the songs being recorded in Havana. There is also footage from the Buena Vista Social Club concerts in Amsterdam and New York City’s Carnegie Hall. In addition, many of the individual musicians talk about their lives in Castro’s Cuba and about how they got started in a musical career.
