Need Help With Writing?

Do you need help with writing? If so, visit the University Writing Center to work with a peer writing tutor:

203 Taylor Hall
898-5042
Monday-Thursday
9am - 5pm
Friday
9am - 3pm

Online writing resources for students, including documentation guides.

Does the Writing Center really help to improve writing? Here’s what the research shows:

“The dynamic peer interaction that is a keynote of most writing center models has been shown to be an effective teaching strategy across a variety of grade levels and disciplines. The research … indicates that both tutor and tutee benefit from the non-hierarchical, complementary relationship that enables both partners to refine and expand their writing and communication skills… .”

“The testimony of students who report more ease and self-confidence with the process of writing, who ask more concise and more pointed questions, the peer tutors and editors whose work shows greater refinement, and the professors who find it easier to focus on the content of students’ work when it is more focused and better organized serve to validate the importance of the writing center.”

Going Green Tip of the Week

Energy bill costing too much?

Try getting in the habit of unplugging your electrical devices when not in use. These appliances still pull energy, even when off, which is called a phantom load. Your best indication of this is your microwave or DVD player that still has lights on, even when not being used.

By eliminating phantom loadz in your household, you could save up to 40% of your energy bill.

Just chew on this: if all phantom loads in US homes were stopped, we could shut down 17 power plants.

For more information please contact: Chico Green Campus Program located in the BMU 301.

UNIVERSITY FILM SERIES

$3 donation appreciated
898-4642
Sept.. 25

Henry Fool (1998, U.S.A.) 128 min. Directed by Hal Hartley. Hosted by Peter Hogue, emeritus, English.*
Hartley’s adventurous film yet is an audacious fable of fate, faith, friendship, and the mysteries of the creative process. The story centers on Simon Grim, a geeky garbage man and part-time writer, and Henry Fool, a mysterious free spirit who intends to amaze the world with his own still-unseen literary masterwork but in the meantime becomes Simon’s mentor and promoter disseminating his disturbing work through the Internet with astonishing results.

Plus an extra added attraction:
The Pressman Negatives (2006, U.S.A.) 09:25 min. Directed by Jason Tannen. Also hosted by Peter Hogue.
The Pressman Negatives is a photographic narrative that explores issues of time, memory and authenticity. It is the story of jewelry thief Sidney Pressman, his cohorts in crime and the dark world they inhabited in a Midwestern city during the 1970s. Through snapshots allegedly taken by him, it documents the final days of Pressman and his criminal colleagues, brought together for one last heist.
