2008-2009 CSU, Chico Scholarship Application Opens Oct. 1

The 2008-2009 CSU, Chico scholarship application opens Oct 1. This single online application allows you to apply for any of the more than 700 university scholarships for which you may be eligible. Scholarship criteria may include scholastic achievement, financial need, campus or community service, and educational objectives, as well as other measures. Apply now before the end-of-semester rush. Be sure to allow faculty adequate time for a letter of recommendation. All application materials must be submitted by the January 1, 2008 deadline (note the new deadline), without exception. To be considered for need-based scholarships, you must also file a FAFSA or renewal FAFSA by March 2, 2008. International Forum, Oct. 2

Politics and the run-up to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing presented by Dr Weikun Cheng, History Department.

The 2008 Beijing Olympics have provoked enormous national pride in China and have engaged both the government and the mass population in a beautifying-Beijing/China movement. Yet this opportunity for displaying China’s economic achievements is also being used by various political and human rights organizations to challenge the political record of China’s long-ruling Communist Party.

Have Lunch with a Hippie

Skip Yowell, self-proclaimed hippie, adventure-junkie extraordinaire, author, and co-founder of Jansport, will be speaking at the Associated Students Bookstore on Wed., Oct. 10 from 12pm - 12:45pm. Skip will be speaking about his unorthodox journey to the top of the outdoor industry while showing amazing slides of his outdoor adventures. Fall Performance Extravaganza, Oct. 12

The English Graduate Student Council (EGSC) is sponsoring the Fall Performance Extravaganza at the 1078 Gallery on October 12 from 7pm - 10pm. Forum Oct. 8 on "disorderly events" ordinance

A forum on the City of Chico proposed “disorderly events” ordinance will be held at 6pm, Monday, Oct. 8, in the BMU Auditorium. Information about the ordinance will be presented, a panel will discuss its pros and cons, and there will be an opportunity for those in attendance to comment and ask questions. AS President Osazee Edebiri will be on the panel, and asks students to contact him if they have questions they would like asked or issues they would like addressed. Bring Your Children to See a Performance of Miss Nelson is Missing at CSU, Chico

Miss Nelson is Missing is a perfect show for families, and anyone who has a young child is encouraged to bring them to this performance at Laxson Auditorium on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 2pm.

Perfect for families, Miss Nelson is Missing is a family presentation of the well-loved children’s book of the same name. This story brings life to the students of room 207 and their realizations that perhaps their behavior can bring back their missing teacher. This comedy will make you laugh out loud, as it relays its message that the grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence, and that good behavior is usually the best strategy. Appropriate for all ages.

AS Late Night Event Hip Hop Dance on Oct. 6

On Sat., Oct. 6 at 9pm in Common Grounds (in the BMU Basement), Late Night Chico will be holding a Hip Hop Dance. It will be instructed by a Chico Dance Theatre member and Hype Dance Studio instructor for the 1st hour and the 2nd hour will be a free hip hop dance and distribution of gift certificate prizes for the best moves. There will be a live DJ, free food, and drinks and free admission like always.

LGBTQ Meetings Every Wednesday

CSU, Chico’s Pride/Safezone hosts weekly meetings every Wednesday in BMU 312 at 6pm.

Pride is designed to provide socialization and interaction between lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and straight-allied college students. The organization also functions as a political, social service, and educational body on campus. Pride participates in several campus sponsored events, student panels, social gatherings and general meetings.

We are a student organization at CSU, Chico, officially recognized by the Associated Students Student Activities Office.

Watershed Invites Submissions

Watershed, CSU, Chico’s literary magazine, invites students, faculty, and community members to submit their original and unpublished works for possible publication in its fall 2007 issue.

The categories solicited are:
* Poetry
* Short fiction (4,000 words or less)
* Creative nonfiction
* Black and white photography
* Line drawings
* Illustrations

Please note: Artwork/illustrations should be submitted in a format no larger than 8.5” × 11”.

Include with submission:
A cover letter with your name, address, phone number, and a brief biographical statement up to 60 words
A self-addressed stamped envelope for reply and manuscript return

Please do not put your name on the pages of your submissions. The submission deadline is Friday, Oct. 5, 2007.

Up Til Dawn: "Building Hope and Constructing Cures"

After last year’s success of being #1 in the Nation and raising over $189,000 for St.Jude Children’s Research Hospital, this year’s Up Til Dawn committee is back and ready to stay #1.

The only way to reach this goal is with your help. That’s right, you. Come to the free speech area or to the Student Activities office on the second floor of the BMU to pick up a team form and get involved. This year’s event will be held Nov. 5, 2007 in the O’Connell Gym where we will be “Building Hope and Constructing Cures” for the children of St.Jude Children’s research Hospital.

English Graduate Student Council

The English Graduate Student Council invites students interested in all facets of English studies to join this active and vibrant student organization. Full or part-time students presently participating in the MA program may join at the Graduate Level, undergraduates may join at the Associate Level; yearly dues are $5 and all students must be in good academic standing.

The EGSC sponsors a series of GRE English Subject Test preparatory workshops; seminars that assist students in preparation for their years as a Master’s student or for entry into Ph.D. programs; an annual fall symposium (November 29) offering students the opportunity to showcase their original research; and various socially oriented activities. In addition, EGSC publishes The Erudite, a scholarly journal featuring papers from the fall symposium and other submitted work.

Grant Opportunity for Undergraduate Students

Funds have been allocated by Provost Sandra Flake for the fall 2007 Undergraduate Awards for Research & Creativity. These awards were created to support undergraduate students working closely with individual faculty members on student-designed projects and to assist the faculty in providing students with special innovative learning opportunities.

• Fall awards of up to $500 each will be made available to undergraduates (including graduating seniors).
• A cumulative GPA of 3.25 or above is required.
• Spring award opportunities (up to $500) and summer stipend opportunities ($2,000) will also be discussed.
• Information meetings will be held on:

OCNL = O’Connell Technology Center

Department of Art faculty and Humanities Center Board member Sue Whitmore returns with new work in mixed media for her second show at the HCG (the first was the wildly popular Cozy in Oct. 2003). She is making objects that “you think you recognize but possibly have forgotten what they refer to.” Whitmore earned her MFA from the University of Washington and has studied, taught, and had residencies in Italy, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Montana, and Oregon.

Student Computing Workshops

Student Computing is presenting these drop-in workshops next week:

No sign-up is required.

The Power Point workshop will teach students how to create a simple Power Point presentation from a template, by using AutoContent Wizard and by using existing slides. Students will learn to modify, format, customize their slides for presentations, create hyperlinks and format a PowerPoint presentation for the Web. They will learn printing techniques, how to deliver their presentation as well as how to manage their PowerPoint presentation files.

Mistah F.A.B. Hip Hop Artist Live in the BMU

AS Presents is proud to present Bay Area artists Mistah F.A.B., Zion I, Turf Talk, and The Federation on Thurs., Oct. 18, 2007. Doors open at 7pm. The performance will begin at 8pm.

Known for his latest smash album, Da Baydestrian, Mistah F.A.B. has emerged on the music scene under the guidance of the late Mac Dre and Thizz Nation. Alongside him will be returning favorites Zion I, whose trip-hop beats with lyrics focus on a message of unity, hope, and spiritual awareness. Turf Talk and The Federation will round out the Bay Area bill, making this hip hop show a groundbreaking event for all of the students and community of Chico to enjoy.

SF Comedy Show, Oct. 4

AS Presents is proud to present the 7th Annual San Francisco Comedy Competition in the BMU Auditorium on Thurs., Oct. 4, 2007. Doors open at 7pm. The performance will begin at 7:30pm.

For the past seven years the San Francisco Comedy Competition has been a favorite experience for the city of Chico. Past participants of this monumental event have included Robin Williams, Dana Carvey, and Ellen DeGeneres. Each year hundreds of comedians travel to San Francisco to compete in the international event. The group has been narrowed down to the final five, and now these elite entertainers bring their routines to the campus for all to see.

Hypnotist Justin James Live

AS Presents is proud to present Las Vegas hypnotist Justin James on Thurs., Oct. 11, 2007. Doors open at 7pm. The performance will begin at 7:30pm.

Involved in the entertainment business for the last 20 years, Justin James has developed a one-of-a-kind performance involving hypnosis, music, and comedy. The Las Vegas headliner has traveled from coast to coast amusing thousands with his act, where he incorporates members of the audience to perform hypnosis on. Both James and his performance are unpredictable, and guaranteed to blow your mind!

Ballroom Dance Club Workshop

Hey sports fans - we have a workshop Friday, Sept. 28 in Yolo 213. We will be teaching western style and line dances. It costs $5 per person and runs from 7pm - 9pm. As always, members get in for free. Membership is still $20. Bring a friend and have a blast.
