CAVE Alternative Spring Break Applications

Community Action Volunteers in Education (CAVE) Alternative Spring Break (ASB) program is about targeting specific needs outside of our community to bring awareness back home.

Denver, Colorado Trip Spring ‘08: Volunteers will work with the Autism Society of Denver and the Children’s Hospital, as well as other smaller organizations.

Washington DC Trip Spring ‘08: Volunteers will work with the homeless population and will volunteer at shelters and homeless feeding programs, as well at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in D.C.

Free Speech Evaluations for Students

The CMSD Program provides assessments for a variety of communication disorders (articulation, language, voice, stuttering and problems associated with brain injury, stroke and neurological impairments).

These evaluations are offered free to faculty, staff, students and their dependents. If you are interested in scheduling an appointment, please call the Center for Communication Disorders at 898-5871 or stop by the office. We are located in AJH Room #100 (adjacent to the Bidwell Mansion).

Grammy Nominees Cherryholmes and Chico's own Mossy Creek Featured in an Evening of Bluegrass

Chico Performances is bringing America’s first family of bluegrass, Cherryholmes, to Laxson Auditorium on Nov. 4, at 7:30pm. Opening for them will be Chico’s own Bluegrass band Mossy Creek.

Cherryholmes is a mom, a pop, and four extremely talented children between the ages of 13 and 23. Put instruments in their hands (banjos, mandolins, fiddle, guitar) and put them on tour, and viola! you have “America’s Newest First Family of Bluegrass” - Cherryholmes, which happens to be their last name. A Cherryholmes performance includes twin fiddles, Irish step dancing, classic country yodeling, and an old-time claw hammer, in addition to their dynamic brand of bluegrass. 2005 IBMA award winners for Entertainers of the Year, they received a 2006 Grammy nomination for Best Bluegrass Album of the Year.

Opening for Cherryholmes will be Chico’s own rising Bluegrass sensation, Mossy Creek.

Internship Fair, Nov. 7

The Office of Experiential Education and the Human Resource Management Association are co-sponsoring an Internship Fair on Wed., Nov. 7 from 10am to 2pm in the Bell Memorial Union Auditorium.

Representatives from over 60 companies representing engineering, business, government, and non-profits will be available to provide information about their internship opportunities. The event is open to students from all majors.

Selections from the Portland Documentary and eXperimental Film Festival 2007 Curated and hosted by Gretchen Hogue. Co-sponsored with the A.S. Committee on Arts and Lectures (CAL)
Gretchen Hogue, Portland, OR-based filmmaker/curator, hosts a new batch of contemporary films selected from Portland’s Documentary and Experimental Film Festival, which she directed this past March.
Hogue has been a regular curator at the University Film Series: last spring, The Kids Are Alright: New Future Visions (nearly 20 new short films); in 2006, Stumptown Girls, an evening of lady-made movies from Portland as part of Women’s History Month; in 2005, two nights’ worth of films including Brave New Worlds (“documentary filmmaking—with the radical freedoms of experimental cinema—focusing on topics ranging from literacy and the confines of language to amateur radio and Joe Dimaggio”) and Re-Imagining Her (“a collection of recent experimental films by female filmmakers, all of whom explore different methods of re-presenting women’s realities by variously working with self-portraiture, animation, re-appropriated footage, and home movies”); and initially in 2004, an evening of her short works.

Important Corection -- Chico Ballroom Dance Club

I just got word that this Friday, we are not learning street hustle from Major Tom. This Friday we are learning Beg/Int Waltz. The wonderful people teaching how to do this graceful dance are Tom Ussery and Elbert Chan. Memberships are now $15.00, the lessons are $3.00, the dance is $2.00, both are $4.00 and if you come in a costume we take $1.00 off your fee.

Cross-Cultural Center Presents Open House, Leadership Conference

The campus community is invited to stop by the Cross-Cultural Center’s Open House on Tues., Nov. 6, from 5pm - 6:30pm in University Center 101. The open house will include food, information on the program, and a tour of the center.

The program will also hold a free leadership conference the following Tues., Nov. 13, from 5pm - 9pm. The mixer will begin in Selvester’s, followed by three concurrent workshops in Holt and a debriefing at the Cross-Cultural Center. NPR Favorite Ira Glass Appearing in Laxson Auditorium, Nov. 3

Popular NPR radio host Ira Glass presents “Radio Stories & Other Stories” on Sat., Nov. 3 at 7:30pm in Laxson Auditoriam, brought to you by Chico Performances, KCHO and KFPR Radio, and Cottonparty.

For 12 years, This American Life has been lauded for reinventing the way people listen to radio. “We do these stories that are like movies for radio,” says Ira Glass, the show’s venerable writer, producer, and on-air host. Locally broadcast on KCHO/KFPR radio, This American Life airs on 500 NPR stations with 1.7 million listeners weekly. A television version of This American Life featuring Glass premiered on Showtime earlier this year. This event is co-sponsored by KCHO/KFPR and Cottonparty.

Rebuild New Orleans Project Hot Dog Feed Fundraiser

Construction Management ‘s IOVTA IV Honor Society and MCAA are sponsoring a hot dog feed fundraiser to help the College of ECC Rebuild New Orleans Project head back to New Orleans for a third time in January with 117 volunteers to help rebuild the homes and lives torn apart by the devastating Hurricane Katrina. The project goal is to build homes and build hope.

Our organization stands for the Pillars of Academics, Sisterhood, and Community Service, and we place a strong emphasis on the promotion of Multiculturalism at CSU, Chico and within the local community.

Upward Bound 2008 Summer Task Team Supervisor Internship Available

The Upward Bound Projects, a Federally Funded TRiO Program, is a year round program for motivated students with academic potential who want to continue their education after high school.

Duties include the following:
· Knowledge of and ability to direct and motivate non-traditional high school students.
· Demonstration of organization and mentoring skills.
· Ability to supervise adolescents and to assure their safety and well-being.
· Ability to implement the specific goals of the project as assigned.
· Participant instruction and monitoring.
· Compliance with the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) and other applicable regulations particularly in the area of safe work practices.
· Student advisement; requisite paperwork and final report.
· Hours are 1pm to 4:30pm Monday thru Thursday, June 16 thru July 24, 2008.

WAGES: $715 Stipend and internship units.

We are currently accepting applications for Coordinator & Group Leader positions for many of the 22 different programs we offer. CAVE staff members are responsible for interviewing, screening, and supervising large numbers of volunteers. In addition to receiving significant leadership experience staff members receive 3 units of credit, attend a retreat before the start of the Spring semester, a banquet at the end of the semester, & also make lasting friendships with some of the 70+ fellow staff members.

The Sacramento Semester program offers undergraduate students the chance to get immersed in California government and politics and gain on-the-job experience in politics and policy by doing an internship and taking seminars for a total of 12 units. "The Vagina Monologues" Auditions

It is the 10th year anniversary of Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues!” CSU, Chico will be hosting V-Day this year with performances of the show during the last weekend of February at the CSU, Chico BMU Auditorium. The performances will raise awareness about violence that occur to women all over the world, as well as raise money for local Chico charities. Men of Honor Fall Ball Tickets on Sale Now

Men of Honor presents the 2007 Fall Ball on Thurs., Nov. 8 from 7pm - 1am. This year’s theme is “Masquerade of Mystery” and takes place at the Chico Event Center (above the Brickworks). This “suit & tie” event includes music, dinner, dancing, contests including “best dressed” and “best mask.” The entire campus community is invited to attend.

Men of Honor is also selling raffle tickets for an Xbox 360. Raffle tickets are available through Robert Williams or other Men of Honor members, and the drawing will be held at the Fall Ball. The winner need not be present at the event. Tickets are $1 a piece or less, depending on number of tickets purchased.

Advance event tickets are on sale until Nov. 3 for $25 Single/$45 Couple. Tickets may be purchased at the Student Activities Office in BMU 213, or by contacting Robert Williams (323) 841-4502. Men of Honor will also hold ticket sales on campus until the event.

Early Halloween Organ Concert Sunday

Sun., Oct. 28 at 2pm, Harlen Adams Theatre

Chico’s famous University Centennial Pipe Organ will spook audiences in an Early Halloween concert performed by David Rothe.

J.S. Bach’s “Toccata and Fugue in d minor” is sure to cackle the rafters of the theatre. And you won’t want to miss Charles Gounod’s “Funeral March for a Marionette,” the theme music for Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Other works include Leon Boelmann’s “Suite Gothique,” Messiaen’s “Apparition,” and Flagler’s “Alpine Fantasy and Storm.”

Rothe is celebrating his 40th year of teaching at CSU, Chico, and this organ concert will be his last solo appearance as a member of the CSU, Chico music faculty.

AS Late Night-Chico Idol 2nd Round

AS Late Night is proud to present Chico Idol 1st round preliminary on Friday, Nov. 9. Doors open at 8:30pm. The Second Round will begin at 9pm.

Come watch as the top 15 contenders for Chico Idol fight for a spot in the Top 5. You will not want to miss this. These are the best that came out for the first round that have moved on and are now fighting to get the chance to win Cash Prizes. Graduate Equity Fellowship for Under-Served Groups

The goal of the Graduate Equity Fellowship Program (GEFP) is to prepare, motivate, encourage and support those graduate students who aspire to obtain a doctorate and pursue an academic career in teaching and research. Awards for an academic year total $5,500. The two-part program provides a stipend of $750/semester and a salary of $2,000/semester for research related activities under the direction of a faculty mentor.

To be eligible, applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:
You must be economically disadvantaged; come from an educationally disadvantaged background/experienced restricted access to quality educational opportunities; be admitted to the University and a master’s degree program; classified as a California resident; and there must be a probable need for faculty in your academic discipline - i.e., a projected shortfall in the supply of qualified faculty in your field of study.

Deadline: April 1 for Fall
November 1 for Spring

In this, one of his most personal films, Atom Egoyan himself plays a photographer hired to capture images of Armenian churches for a calendar. He takes his wife (real-life wife and frequent star Arsinée Khanjian) along as a translator, and, as they travel with their Armenian guide, their relationship begins to unravel. The photographer returns to Canada with his pictures, but without his wife, who has gradually been drawn to her ethnic roots and has fallen in love with the guide.

*Part of the Humanities Center’s theme for this year—“The Book.”
