CAVE's Alternative Spring Break Program Accepting Applications

Alternative Spring Break (ASB) program is about targeting specific needs outside of our community to bring awareness back home.

Washington DC Trip Spring ‘08: Volunteers will work with the homeless population and volunteer at homeless shelters and feeding programs.

National Park Trip Spring ‘08: Volunteers will spend one week in California at a National Park restoring wilderness area, maintaining trails, cleaning up sites, repairing campsites, and removing non-native plants.

CAVE Student Leader Positions Now Available

Are you a motivated student searching for a way to gain valuable experience? Do you enjoy working in an office of diverse personalities while gaining valuable leadership skills applicable to a variety of job settings? Well then CAVE is the place for you.

We are currently accepting applications for Coordinator & Group Leader positions for many of the 22 different programs we offer. CAVE staff members are responsible for interviewing, screening, and supervising large numbers of volunteers. In addition to receiving significant leadership experience staff members receive 3 units of credit, attend a retreat before the start of the spring semester, a banquet at the end of the semester, & also make lasting friendships with some of the 70+ fellow staff members.

Bike Mechanic Job Opportunity

The Adventure Outings Bike Cart is now hiring for the spring semester. We are seeking motivated and dependable students with bike repair experience. The job description would be serving time at the Bike Cart, which is open Monday through Thursday 12-4, as well as working at an off-campus shop fixing bikes for our used bike auctions.

If interested in this position please turn in a cover letter, resume and Spring 2008 school schedule to the Adventure Outings office located in the BMU. Deadline for resumes is Friday, Nov. 30 and interviews will be held the week following.

Free Chico Forensic Conference, Nov. 10

The Anthropology Department and the Anthropology Graduate Student Association (AGSA), in conjunction with Associated Students, will be hosting the 5th Chico Forensic Conference TOMORROW (Sat., Nov. 10) in AYRES 106 from 8:30am - 4:30pm.

This event is free and open to all. It will feature five nationally-renowned forensic anthropologists, who will give presentations on their areas of expertise. Guest speakers include John Byrd, PhD DABFA, JPAC; Todd Fenton, PhD, Michigan State University; Alison Galloway, PhD DABFA, UC Santa Cruz; Stephen Ousley, PhD, Mercyhurst College; and Steven Symes, PhD DABFA, Mercyhurst College.

Free Speech Evaluation for Students

The CMSD Program provides assessments for a variety of communication disorders (articulation, language, voice, stuttering and problems associated with brain injury, stroke and neurological impairments).

Get Your Tickets Now for Intimate Performance of Carmen

CSU, Chico’s Opera Workshop presents an English-language, condensed version of Bizet’s opera Carmen.

Performances take place at 7:30p.m. Tues., Nov. 13 and Wed., Nov. 14 in the Performing Arts Center’s intimate Rowland-Taylor Recital Hall.

Opera Workshop’s orchestra and cast of thirty singers will bring to life the opera’s familiar tunes, including the “Toréador Song” and “Habanera.” The production will feature costumes, dramatic lighting, and simple sets and props. The opera will shine a spotlight on talented CSU, Chico voice students and also students from Pleasant Valley High School’s choir. Cast in the main roles are Molly Mahoney (Carmen) and Eric Seiler (Don Jose).

Carmen has bewitched audiences since its premiere in Paris in 1875 with its colorful, passionate score pulsating with Gypsy sensual rhythms, its shocking denouncements, and its sexuality powerful title character, opera’s ultimate femme fatale.

North State Symphony to Perform Mahler's Monumental Second Symphony, Nov. 17 & 18

The North State Symphony, joined by two guest soloists and choral ensembles from Chico and Redding, will perform Gustav Mahler’s monumental Second Symphony.

Performances take place Sat., Nov. 17 at 7:30pm at Redding’s Cascade Theatre and Sun., Nov. 18 at 2pm at Chico’s Laxson Auditorium.

Mahler was inspired by Beethoven in writing his Second Symphony. Like Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Mahler’s Second has a large chorus, which sings with the orchestra in the work’s finale.

Joining the North State Symphony will be the CSU, Chico University Choir, conducted by David Scholz, the Shasta College Community Chorale, and the Simpson University Chorus. Also performing are two professional vocal soloists, Elizabeth Madsen Bradford and Joyce Parry Moore.

Travel to Spain and Portugal Next June!

The College of Humanities and Fine Arts is hosting a tour to Spain and Portugal June 1-12, 2008. The faculty-in-residence is history professor Stephen E. Lewis, who earned his PhD from UC San Diego. His specialty is Latin American history. Students will be able to get 1-3 units of credit for course work related to the trip, if they choose.

You can learn more about Spain and Portugal and the trip on Thurs., Dec. 6. Professor Lewis will be hosting a Humanities Center program in Trinity 100 from 4pm to 5:30pm.

The $3750 package includes round-trip airfare from San Francisco, airport fees, transfers, 3-4 diamond hotels, buffet breakfast daily, five dinners; comprehensive sightseeing tours of Lisbon, Mérida, Córdoba, Toledo, and Madrid; entrance included to Lisbon’s Ajuda Palace and Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, Mérida’s Roman Amphitheatre and National Museum of Roman Art and many other sites.

Recent work by BFA student and Humanities Center Gallery Assistant Rodolfo Salgado will be on display in his Bachelor of Fine Arts culminating exhibition, Slight Coagulation, in the BFA Gallery in Ayres Hall on the campus of CSU, Chico. The show runs Nov. 26 through Dec. 7. A reception with the artist will be held Nov. 29, 5-7pm.

Salgado’s interest in the aesthetics and movement of liquids is manifested in this solo exhibition in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional art works including prints and ceramic sculpture. Salgado creates an imaginary world of tubes, pipes, and other organic and industrial forms that shoot, leak, spray, drip, and splatter an array of fluids. The results are objects of beauty and gravity.

Jake Shimbakuro and Joe Craven Coming to Chico in an Unbelievable Evening of Music, Nov. 15

Twenty-nine-year-old ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro has been compared to the likes of guitar legends Eddie Van Halen and Jimi Hendrix, and is already renowned for lightning-fast fingers and revolutionary playing techniques. What he plays on the ukulele defies label or category - everything from jazz, blues, funk, and classical to bluegrass, folk, flamenco, and “rock n’ roll.” Multi-instrumentalist Joe Craven is the master of world rhythms, combining influence from folk, rock n’ roll, Americana, blues, jazz, salsa, and more.

Capital Fellows Program

The Capital Fellows Programs, sponsored by the Center for California Studies at CSU, Sacramento, gives college graduates an opportunity to engage in public service. Fellows work 10-11 months as full-time staff members in the California State Assembly, Senate, Executive Branch or within the California Court System.

Everyday People, Everyday Activists, Nov. 13

Cross Cultural Leadership Conference Next Week

The conference consists of three student-led workshops open to all students interested in the Cross Cultural Leadership program, and will prepare students for leadership roles and enhance student organization success. Native American Historical Walk, Nov. 14

In Celebration of National American Indian Heritage Month.

Join us Wed., Nov. 14, for a campus historical walk “Before CSU, Chico.” Mechoopda Indian Tribe Cultural Liaison Arlene Ward and Archaeological Research Program Director Greg White will lead a walking tour of the CSU, Chico campus, and students, staff, instructors and community members are welcome to attend. The tour will focus on Mechoopda heritage sites, early archaeological sites, and historical building locations now no longer evident, above ground. Selections from the Portland Documentary and eXperimental Film Festival 2007 Curated and hosted by Gretchen Hogue. Co-sponsored with the A.S. Committee on Arts and Lectures (CAL)
Gretchen Hogue, Portland, OR-based filmmaker/curator, hosts a new batch of contemporary films selected from Portland’s Documentary and Experimental Film Festival, which she directed this past March.
Hogue has been a regular curator at the University Film Series: last spring, The Kids Are Alright: New Future Visions (nearly 20 new short films); in 2006, Stumptown Girls, an evening of lady-made movies from Portland as part of Women’s History Month; in 2005, two nights’ worth of films including Brave New Worlds (“documentary filmmaking—with the radical freedoms of experimental cinema—focusing on topics ranging from literacy and the confines of language to amateur radio and Joe Dimaggio”) and Re-Imagining Her (“a collection of recent experimental films by female filmmakers, all of whom explore different methods of re-presenting women’s realities by variously working with self-portraiture, animation, re-appropriated footage, and home movies”); and initially in 2004, an evening of her short works.

CSU Chancellor's Doctoral Incentive Program Applications Available

CSU, Chancellor’s Doctoral Incentive Program applications are now available at the School of Graduate, International and Interdisciplinary Studies, THMA 209.

Those individuals who will be new or continuing full-time students in doctoral programs at accredited universities anywhere in the United States during the 2008/2009 academic year may apply.

The purpose of this program is to increase the pool of individuals with the qualifications, motivation and skills to teach the diverse student body in the California State University. The program provides financial assistance to students who show promise of becoming strong candidates for CSU instructional faculty positions. This program provides the following:

A loan of up to $10,000 per year up to a total of $30,000 within 5 years. Twenty percent of the loan is forgiven for each year of full-time postdoctoral teaching at a CSU campus. After five years of full-time faculty service, the entire loan amount can be forgiven.

The campus deadline for submission of documents to the Graduate School is March 3, 2008.

Upward Bound Task Team Supervisor Internship Available for Summer 2008

The Upward Bound Projects, a Federally Funded TRiO Program, is a year round program for motivated students with academic potential who want to continue their education after high school.

Duties include the following:
· Knowledge of and ability to direct and motivate non-traditional high school students.
· Demonstration of organization and mentoring skills.
· Ability to supervise adolescents and to assure their safety and well-being.
· Ability to implement the specific goals of the project as assigned.
· Participant instruction and monitoring.
· Compliance with the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) and other applicable regulations particularly in the area of safe work practices.
· Student advisement; requisite paperwork and final report.
· Hours are 1pm to 4:30pm Monday thru Thursday, June 16 thru July 24, 2008.

WAGES: $715 Stipend and internship units.

Description: DE is the residence hall move-out program where volunteers receive unwanted items during move-out on May 15 -16. The DE Coordinators will organize and implement the Diversion Excursion Program. This will include organizing interns/volunteers, research and strategic planning, programmatic implementation and coordination. Additional job functions include attendance of weekly meetings, record keeping, volunteer recruitment, research of funding opportunities, to assist with production of PR materials, and outreach to other organizations.

Education: Must be a currently enrolled CSU, Chico student, a minimum of 6 units.

Compensation: $7.25/hour (February - May) for approximately 70 hours and optional 2 units academic credit (Spring 2007).

  • Pay rate will increase after January.

Youssou N'Dour and the Super Etoile de Dakar play African Pop Music , Nov. 29

Chico Performances is proud to present Africa’s pop superstar Youssou N’Dour and the Super Etoile de Dakar on Thurs., Nov. 29, in Laxson Auditorium.

Youssou N’Dour and his band play modern Senegalese music, known in the Wolof language as mbalax [“Umm-Bah-Laakh”]. Mbalax is an enchanting blend of Senegal’s traditional percussion and griot singing combined with Afro-Cuban and indigenous dance flavors. N’Dour has garnered much attention in the United States, including nods from Peter Gabriel, Sting, and Wyclef Jean. The Los Angeles Times noted that N’dour’s music was “the finest example of the meeting of African and Western music: wholesome, urgent and thoughtful.”

International Forum, Nov. 14

A Profile of Youth in the United Arab Emirates by Dr. Chris Coughlin, Child Development

All societies face similar issues in assisting youth make the transition from adolescent to adulthood. Arab countries such as the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.), however, appear to be confronting a number of particular issues. This arises partly from the effects of globalization as well as rapid economic development. The present research was based on a comprehensive structured questionnaire to 6,672 Arab youth in their last three years of secondary school in the U.A.E. The survey was used to determine the main challenges to successful futures for youth as well as ways of assisting youth during their school years. This presentation will focus on highlighting findings from this study.

SMASH Awards

SMASH Awards

The Department of Communication Design and the Digital Filmmakers Guild (DFG) will be hosting the Fall 2007 SMASH Awards (Student of Media Arts Showcase) on Dec. 13. The event will be held at the El Rey Theatre in Downtown Chico at 7pm. This is the first year that the event will be held off-campus. This free show will give the chance for anyone to attend and view student submitted films. The awards will be video recorded live with a three-camera remote studio setup. Highlights of the night will include the traditional awarding of trophies as well as a performance by the Normal Street Jazz Band.

Geography and Planning Department celebrates GIS Day in honor of Geography Awareness Week with Open House, Map Sale

The public and the campus community are invited to an Open House next Wed., at the GIS computer lab from 10am to 4pm in Butte Hall 501, with door prizes, antique map display, and unique geographic presentations. Surplus maps and cartographic supplies (pens, papers, precision compasses) will be sold in the Butte Hall lobby from noon to 4pm.

LGBTQ Meetings Every Wednesday in BMU 312

Pride is designed to provide socialization and interaction between lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and straight-allied college students. The organization also functions as a political, social service, and educational body on campus.
